I liked the Zip Trim, and the universal chuck was a large part of that. It takes a little time to find a technique that's fast and works well. The exact technique will be different for different people, so experiment for 200 cases to see what works for you. In general, unscrew the knurled ring half a turn to open the jaws and insert the case. Turn the knurled ring clockwise to engage the jaws to the case rim and pull the case back against the spindle on the Zip Trim. My first inclination was to try to hold the case head against the Zip Trim spindle to keep it straight, but that's very awkward and usually results in the jaws engaging the case above the rim and slipping, causing wobbly off center brass. Let the jaws catch the rim, and once it does, stop touching the brass as the chuck is tightened. The other way to keep the universal chuck from working is to try to insert the brass when the chuck is not opened far enough to grab the rim. Immediately before inserting the brass, turn the knurled ring counterclockwise for half a turn. One of the reviewers claimed his universal chuck had a break-in period and then worked more smoothly. That was true of mine as well. I think this could be improved if the chuck was spring loaded so the knurled ring was turned to open the jaws and released to have them tighten and cam against the case automatically, but it works very well as is once the operator gets the hang of it. I trimmed 228 cases with the shell holder in an electric drill, and a couple of days later I trimmed 471 of the same type of case with the Zip trim and Universal Jaw Chuck. I think the Zip Trim and Universal Jaw Chuck is the way to go. It was faster and easier than the drill. There can be a little wobble, but if it wobbles too much to trim the case effectively, there is something wrong with the way the case was loaded, so try again. I actually hold the ball grip case length gauge and cutter in my right hand and the chamfer tool and a ScotchBrite pad in the left,

Garbage. In fact, Lee should just stop making it. For starters, it doesn't open or close smoothly even after cleaning and oiling, it doesn't hold the case AT ALL, it provides no further advantage over tightening a shell holder. I would have returned it if it wasn't such a low price item.SAVE YOUR MONEY!

I bought this product and the #174316 Spindle with drill shank to use in my cordless drill. This combination works excellent. It is a great improvement over the shell holder that spins out all the time. I didn't have any problem getting used to this product, like several other people have. It's a great time saver, you need to get this product if you are using a Lee case trimmer.

I recently bought this product and think this is a must have for a person who trims many different calibers in a evening. I put this in a drill with the chuck holder that goes with it and it works GREAT. I read the other reviews about needing 3 hands and being difficult to use but don't see where they are coming from. The considerably larger knob(about 8 times the size of the normal shell holders) is easy to grab ahold of to tighten on the brass and holds it securely. I used the normal lee trimmer shell holder and used to have shells come loose and fall on the floor periodically but no more. If you have been using the lee trimmers with a drill I recommend buying this it is just so awesome not having to change shell holders all the time.

A great time saver on the Zip Trim but definitely an art form to operate. Like others on this forum, I recommend some preparation before initial use. Disassemble the unit with a snap ring plier, clean out the machining chips and debris from both collar and cap, clean up the main collar threads with a 9/16-18 tap, reassemble and oil the petals sparingly.

This product has worked very effectively in trimming 44 mag brass down for use in 44 spl. The brittle (from hard crimping) case necks were trimmed quickly and smoothly using the LEE trimmer stud in an electric drill. I will be the only handloader using these cases and will surely destroy any rejects in use since they will be still marked as "mag". Users should understand the tool is designed to clamp the case rim front to back between the 3 jaws and the stud or trimmer base. I found this to be a very exceptional tool for the money.

Like all lee products, they're great, but this chuck got past their quality control. The stamp posts were not deep enough to hold the jaws in place. Had to take a punch and deepen the posts. Now it works great.

Okay, I hope you find my review helpful to those who harshly and quickly judge this master piece. First, it works so GOOD and holds the case just fine. Most negative review here says that it does not hold the case. IT DOES. They are just doing it wrong. First thing you have to do is screw it onto the zip trim. Second, you do not screw it in all the way. Third, you must put the case in then twist a little, so the jaws come out and hold in place. Yes it will be lose until you SCREW the whole thing in tight. The 3 jaw is to hold rim of the brass. Think of it this way, if you place a washer and drill it will with a screw. The screw will eventually tighten the washer in place. The 3 jaw acts the same way.

I much prefer the shell holder that comes with the trimmer of the size case you are trimming. I could never get this thing to work right and the cases flew right out onto the floor. It seems that you have to twist and screw this chuck in several more turns than you do the stock case holder that will come with your trimmer guide. The shell holder that comes with the trimmer is much quicker and easier to use (at least for me). Others have said that this thing is a wonder to use and would have nothing else. I'm not doubting that at all. I just prefer the easier, more simple approach, I guess.
