Before ordering, make ...

Before ordering, make sure you check the serial number on your Detective Special. It must start with a "D" or it won't fit. There's lots of variations on Detective Specials. I had to return mine after calling Hogue and discovering they didn't make one for my gun.

The D Frame does not ...

The D Frame does not necessarily Have a D as part of the Serial number. W The important factor is D Frames have a square butt and a full stock.

This grip was purchased ...

This grip was purchased as a replacement for the stock Pachmayrs with Colt medallions that came with my 4th Gen. DS. Hogue correctly states this grip will fit all post-1966 manufacture DS's (with the shortened butt) and the later SF-VI & DSII models. However it's important to note that you MUST drive out the stock pin from the grip portion of the frame or the Hogue grip will NOT slide over it. It's a project that requires a small machinist's hammer, a properly sized pin punch, several deft strokes and lots of patience. Once the stock pin has been removed, the grip slides onto the frame VERY snugly. Once secured into place, it's apparent that the stock to frame fit isn't perfect as I've found noticable gaps behind the trigger guard and between the right hand side of the frame and the grip material. Despite this, the old adage that "form follows function" comes into play because for someone with smaller hands like me, the trigger reach and control of my DS are greatly improved and these grips seem to accomplish more with less. That is, "less" referring to the amount of grip material. The rubber is soft without being overly so, and the cobblestone texture allows for ample purchase with sweaty hands. In my view, they've proven to be worth the small amount of gunsmithing that was necessary to get them to work.
