Produced from 1851-1872, the Navy is one of the most famous and widely-used cap and ball revolvers ever produced. This 1851 replica is perfectly balanced and features a tapered octagon barrel, 6-shot cylinder, fixed sights and a one-piece walnut grip.

The new Piettas are so ...

The new Piettas are so much better than the older ones that it's a night and day difference. I recently purchased the Pietta 1851 Navy in .44 caliber---(yes, I know it's not historically accurate, but it's what I wanted)---and I couldn't be happier. The fit and finish are simply impeccable. The case coloring is so much better than the Uberti revolver I bought a few years ago (see my other review) that I am very pleased with the workmanship put into the revolver. It also shoots great. Very accurate and very reliable. It certainly seems to prefer Remington caps to CCI, but in my experience that is true with most of these replica revolvers. If you are on the fence because of hearsay rumors regarding Pietta quality or because the .44 Navy never really existed, go ahead and get one. No regrets. This is a finely made firearm.

I had an old Colt 44 ...

I had an old Colt 44 sherriffs model that was worn, loose, and although it would shoot ok it would tend to gum up real bad after just a few shots. I decided to go with a new Navy Colt 44 even though it had the 8 inch barrel. I absolutely love this gun. It was spot on accurate out of the box and not a lot of recoil which makes it a pleasure for the wife to shoot. Very, very good product at a very reasonable price. The trick with all these guns are to clean them after every shoot and then it's a breeze to keep in great shape. I also found that the #10 Remington caps are best fitting for this gun.

Bought one a few weeks ago and have shot it almost every day. The bluing is very rich and beautiful (better than Uberti) very accurate at up to 30 yards. It calls for a #10 cap but works better with #11 caps. This is one of my wife's favorite revolvers. This is saying a lot seeing how she collects many different firearms we would defiantly recommend anyone to purchase this gun. Very reliable and very good fit and finish.

While I have not shot this gun yet I have this model in the brass framed version and I am very happy with it. I am well satisfied with Pietta products and feel they are well worth the money. Fit, finish, timing; I have no complaints. While not a reproduction of any particular original percussion revolver, this is a fun gun to shoot and I love shooting the .44 caliber. I bought this steel version so I can "load it up and make smoke" without worrying about a soft brass frame. Buy it!

I bought this gun a ...

I bought this gun a couple of months ago, and the fit and finish are good. It functions flawlessly, but you have to take care not to allow spent caps to fall down into the action. This was a common problem to this gun back in the old days, so it isn't an issue.When I first got the gun, the wedge pin was in very tightly, making removing the barrel very difficult. This required a brass punch to drift it out. Another tip I got that helped was to tap on the face of the barrel with a brass or rubber mallet to loosen the pin.The nipples can be finicky about which caps they like, CCI #10's are too small, and #11's are too large. Mine prefers Remington #10 caps.Really my only gripe about this gun is that mine shot very high and to the left right out of the box. Filing on the rear sight (on the hammer) helped this a bit, but it still shoots a good foot high and left at 25 yards.

This is an incredible ...

This is an incredible firearm and I would highly recommend it for any application from hunting to cowboy action shooting. I use pre-made cartdridges and have had no chain fires, probably due to the way paper and .454 diameter rounds. These tend to be the most accurate as they give a very tight seal. My only gripe is the screw on the left of the frame works its way loose, but a regular check keeps this a minor issue. Other than that I love how well the pistol shoots, and drawing from the holster the muzzle is dead on every time.
