The RCBS Lead Bullet Casting Thermometer is a great accessory for any caster looking to have an accurate way to determine the temperature of their melted lead alloy. This thermometer measures between 200 and 1000 degrees Fahrenheit within 1 degree. The dial face features large numbers that are easy to read and the 6" handles is a great added safety feature so your hands don't have to be exposed to the high heat of the melted lead. The 6" probe was designed to work with the RCBS Pro-Melt furnace or pot but works equally well with other manufacturers casting furnaces.

I have two thermometer as constant check on accuracy and I often use two pots at the same time. Would like them to be a bit more sturdy but they work okay for me

Product does exactly as it was meant to do, and that is give a temperature of the molten metal in the furnace. The only problem encountered is it is a bit large for some of the smaller furnaces in use today.

I hand build Flint and ...

I hand build Flint and Percussion locks for the guns I build. The most critical part is in the tempering of the springs. After hours of shaping and fitting the spring, the part of getting it bright red hot then quenching it in oil is easy. That makes the spring brittle. Reheating it at the right lower temperature is the tricky part. Too hot and the spring will be weak and take a set. Too hot and it will still be brittle and snap the first time you try to use it. After remaking many springs after not doing the tempering right and a lot of head scratching RCBS came to the rescue (as usual). I wrap a spring in aluminum foil to keep the molten lead off it and simply drop the spring in the lead pot. The RCBS thermometer lets me bring the temperature up to the right point. No more broken springs thanks to a little head scratching and RCBS.

I bought one of these and am very happy with it, the thing that I like most about it is the speed at which it operates. What I mean by this is that the needle moves to temperature very quickly when the thermometer is put into the lead pot. Very sturdy construction. Not rinky dink.
