Product Information

Hornady TAP ammunition is a good choice for personal defense, and is used extensively by law enforcement agencies. This due in part to the fact that the propellants used in the loading of this ammunition were engineered to minimize muzzle flash. This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable brass cases.

Special Note from Hornady Manufacturing:

We are making a running change to the TAP ammunition. This includes changing from Blackened Nickel Cases to Bright Silver Nickel cases. Using the Silver Nickel cases has all the advantages of Blackened Nickel and the added benefit of being able to see the cartridges more clearly in low light conditions as well as when checking for loaded chambers.

Aware that the S.W.A.T. ...

Aware that the S.W.A.T. snipers in my department utilize the 168 gr. version of Hornady's .308 TAP, I acquired a few box's and found the loading groups under an inch out of my dependable Remington 78 bolt gun. I subsequently put this old rifle to use on a 16 degree morning in the Georgia deer woods this past December when a chunky four pointer stepped out in front of my blind at 6:55 AM. I wasn't as impressed with the accuracy(it was only an 80 yard shot) as compared to the lethality of this single round I fired. The buck was quartering away when I slipped that bullet between his left side ribs angling toward the off (right) shoulder. At the shot, this deer instantly collapsed dead after absorbing all of the bullet energy that had been sent his way. After "un-zippering" the buck, the bullet was recovered up against the off shoulder where I noted it to be seriously deformed yet still retaining a good deal of it's original mass. I later gave the bullet to a sniper friend of mine so he could show the rest of "the gang" an example of the performance this accurate loading offers when it encounters soft tissue and bone. Another example of more great stuff from Hornady!

I'd had nothing but great ...

I'd had nothing but great experiences with Hornady's products until trying this ammo. The rounds I fired used the new bright nickel casings. After firing around 20 rounds (which grouped great) the gun started to fail to fire occasionally and then altogether. I stripped the gun and found primer pieces in the bolt carrier assembly with a damaged firing pin and a bent retaining pin. I inspected some of the ejected casings and found that the primers had blown out the back, sending pieces of metal back into the gun.Again, all of my experiences with Hornady to this point have been very positive, but this one was certainly not.

Shoots groups just a hair over 1" at 200y in my Remington 700 SPS Tact. AAC-SD. I have shot steel targets at 500 and 600 yards and multiple as well as consistent hits (missed the first shot). I don't have that much experience so I wouldn't be surprised if this ammo can do better than that. Very pleased.

I shot the Hornady TAP 168 grain Amax version. The only difference is less flash during the shot. Better to conceal the shooter. That said everything else is the same. I was able to shoot my best 3 shot group ever with this ammo. at 100 yards shot .35" group. I was blown away that it was that good. Shot a group again and got .38". Saving the rest for hunting EXCELLENT AMMO! Rifle used was a GAP Templar action 20.5"

I run this through my Remington SPS Tactical that has a 20" Barrel and it amazing. Sub MOA, hole for hole @100. Shoots very clean and is very consistent. I am going to reload to Hornady specs with Hornady supplies and hopefully it will be as good the second time!

I tried this in my Remington 700 XCR Compact Tactical with 20" barrel and 1:12 twist and my DPMS SASS with 18" barrel and 1:10 twist. I got sub moa groups without a problem out of both. I don't know if these are meant to be hunting rounds but I'm going to give them a shot ;-).

The 168gr TAP is the best grouping ammo I've tried so far in my FN AR 308. It's an accurate rifle and this ammo makes the most of it. Always prints sub MOA if I do my part and the point of aim doesn't change as the barrel heats up. It's nice and clean as well which I appreciate.

Shot this out my Savage 10FCP HS with the SWFA SS 10X42 HD and my gun just loved it. Shooting round after round just nailing a 1in bulls-eye @ 200yds. Heard a lot of negative things about this ammo but out of a numerous amount of rounds never had a misfire and the powder left a clean residue for low maintenance cleaning. This ammo should get 10 stars.

Thought I would add my opinion about this ammo. I have a total of 5 .308 Win rifles; 3 Remington, and 2 Savage. With this ammo they all will shoot 0.3 in at 100yd all day long! Took my Remington 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD out on 21 May, 20011, a rare windless ND morning, and shot groups which averaged 0.29 at 100yd using a bipod and rear rest off a table! Each individual rifle, even the same model, will like different ammunition. Just because your rifle may not shoot a round well doesn't make it poor ammo.

I recently test the new Hornady TAP in my Remington 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD. What a disappointment. At a 100 yards this ammunition patterned like buckshot, at 200 only 3 out 5 shot made it on the paper. In comparison, the Hornady 168 BHTP Match Grade deliver sub 1/2 MOA. I love Hornady products, with this type of inconsistency I just can't imagine a sniper taking a shot and not being confident where the bullet might go. After 10 rounds, I gave up and threw away the rest.

Earlier during our deer season I shot a doe at 381 yards right at the point of the shoulder and she dropped right there and when I skinned her there was a softball size hole all the way through her and an exit wound. Plus in my book and I mean you could see right through her.
