Product Information

The Hornady Annealing System is the ideal tool for reloaders wanting to reduce work-hardening caused by continuous firing and sizing of brass. When annealing previously fired cases reloaders typically see more uniform bullet pull for increased accuracy and increased brass life. This system comes shipped with one bottle of temperature-indicating liquid and three holders that will work with small, medium and magnum sized cases.

Notes:

Small Holder #1 is designed to work with 222 Remington to 223 Remington size cases and has an inside diameter of .345"

Medium Holder #2 is designed to work with 308 Remington and 30-06 Springfield size cases and has an inside diameter of .475"

Magnum Holder #3 is designed to work with H&H sized cases and has an inside diameter of .545"

This thing is really easy ...

This thing is really easy to use. If you have never annealed, like I have never done, then it is highly recommended that you place an order for the 750 degree Tempilaq. The 750 degree stuff needs to be painted on the inside of the case neck. When I did this, I was pleasantly surprised to see the Tempilac that came with the kit turn exactly when the 750 degree stuff did. Hornady's instructions are spot on in that if you follow them, the necks will indeed heat to precisely 750 degrees which is the exact temperature the necks need to be to properly anneal them.Well done Hornady!

This is a very good addition for anyone who necks cases up or down. Annealing reduces the hardness of the neck and will allow one to reload cases many more times. It is easy to use and there are 3 case holders for all size cases. The temperature fluid must be applied uniformly and sparingly. If you get too much on the case, it will bake on the case and you need to use steel wool to clean it off. Case tumbling won't get it off. Once you establish the time-in seconds- that a specific case burns off the fluid, you don't really need to use the fluid any more. But each case size will be different. For example when doing 30/06 cases, the average was 5.5 seconds.

If you have not annealed ...

If you have not annealed cartridges before and are uncertain on how to best do this task, then is a good product for you. Kit comes with a temperature sensing paste which is placed on the cartridge just below the shoulder and 3 cartridge holders, so you don't burn you fingers. Once you have annealed several cartridges on a given size, you will no longer need the paste. Kit has good instructions, and you will need a power screw driver or cordless drill. Annealing takes time but is worth the effort to save cartridges that you may have put a lot of time into.

Nicely made and looks to ...

Nicely made and looks to be a pretty durable design. Be advised though, that none of the three holders are big enough for 7.62x54R brass. I just drilled out the largest one to the correct diameter (they are made of aluminum, so it is very easy to drill), and now it works just fine.

Found a goodie from Hornady today...Years ago, I started annealing in a pan with about 50 cases standing up in water. It was the accepted way to do it!Then I would "try" to heat the necks evenly, and tip them over... Eh! Slow, messy, uneven, but it was better than nothing.Then I used a Sinclair case spinner (that is used to spin cases with steel wool to polish them)... it was very even, but took forever, because each case has to be locked in the holder with a twisting motion.I saw this goodie at Midway last week when I was browsing for something else, and bought it on a whim.Slick!!The holder fits a 1/4 drill or screwdriver. You drop the case into the holder LOOSE... no tightening. Turn it on and hold it in the flame til you get the color you want, and just tip it over into water, and put another case in the holder... the drill/driver needs to run about 200 RPM, and at that speed, you don't even have to stop the drill - just load another one and keep going!Comes with temperature indicating paste that you can use until you get the hang of what color the brass needs to look like when finished, then you don't use it anymore.

Just a great product for ...

Just a great product for small volume annealing! For my 308 brass, about 8-9 seconds in the flame is perfect and results in very consistent neck tension at next reload. I just drop them into a pie tin with no water needed and they come out perfect. No need for the temp sensing paste after you get used to what to look for.
