The 1858 Remington was one of the major side arms of the Civil War and was the last of the Remington percussion revolvers to be manufactured. This gun features a tapered octagon barrel, steel frame, brass trigger guard, 6-shot cylinder, fixed sights and two-piece walnut grips. R&D Centerfire Conversion Cylinders (sold separately) are for use with steel frame revolvers only.

This is the best cap & ...

This is the best cap & ball pistol I've owned so far. Recoil is really light, and the cylinder is tight and smooth on its pin. The finish on the walnut grips is perfect. They are nicer than my Ruger Old Army's grips, which says something about the quality of Uberti compared to a US Black Powder revolver. I get 1 inch groups at both 50 and 75 feet with Hornady balls, Pyrodex P powder and Remington caps, and haven't had a single misfire or sticky cylinder after 200 rounds in one day. The blued surfaces are perfect on mine. There are no scratches or machine marks anywhere on the barrel or frame. I can't say how well it works with a conversion cylinder, but Cap & Ball shooting is flawless. Uberti is the only choice for replica Remingtons. My next gun will be the Uberti .44 Remington, or maybe a second one of these for a matching pair.

During the past year I've purchaced three Uberti revolvers; the first because the price was right, the other two because of the quality of the first. The .36 caliber 1858 Remington New Model met my expectations of Uberti quality. The revolver indexed perfectly; chambers and bore were aligned. The fit and finish were very good and the only visible markings were the necessary Italian proofs. The revolver fired approx. two inches low at 25 yards with the recommended load but by adjusting the load only slightly it was dead on! The trigger break is crisp with no drag or creep. Durability? Quality? This thing just gets better every time I use it.

This Uberti version of ...

This Uberti version of the Remington 1858 in 36 caliber is a fine looking and shooting cap and ball revolver. The fit/finish on mine was beautiful, a very pleasant surprise. I have 44cals but wanted a light shooter in the '58 platform. The Navy 36 is just about perfect. Recommended load is 15 to 25 grns. I found 20grns of T7 is a good chamber load and with Hornady balls got about a 4in group for 18 shots at 25yds. The front sight is tall and gave me low groups until I found the right sight picture. Windage was right on. The revolver performed flawlessly for the entire range session- 75 shots with no cap or ball hang-ups. The cylinder gets sticky after about 24 shots using T7 which is easily remedied by poping the cylinder and wiping the cylinder pin with a water based cleaner. Trigger pull is crisp, breaks cleanly, and lock-up is nice and tight. Accuracy is best if the bore is swabbed every 3rd or 4th cylinder (again using T7). The 5th cylinder group would open up quite a bit if you waited that long to swab. If you like shooting C&B handguns, the Remmie 58 is a great design and this one is a very nice rendition. I would buy again.
