I have a Model 52C ...

I have a Model 52C Winchester target rifle and must select 22 cartridges to achieve its best performance. Unless you use the most expensive 22's you cannot expect a high degree of accuracy. Recently I shot a ARA competition and was able to obtain a score of 2300 out of 2500 with sorted and selected cases. Later that same day I used the rejects to fire a practice round, my score was 1450. 22's were developed as a black powder cartridge and the reloaded has no control on the performance except for the rim thickness (headspace) and weight. Very expensive 22's are the most consistent, but you can achieve almost as good of results with this device. A must for target shooters.

This product is great, I ...

This product is great, I use to just use a fired .223 case which took a lot more time to measure rim thickness of my .22 LR ammo. I have a Ruger 10/22 Target Rifle and I use The Hornady Rim Thickness Gage to first sort my ammunition based on the rim thickness. Then I sort the alike rim thickness ammo by weight and finally I sort the alike rim thickness and weighed ammo that is alike by using Hornady's Lock-N-Load Bullet Comparator Set. I use two Frankford Arsenal Electronic Calipers (bought on sale here at Midway USA), one set up with the Bullet Comparator gage and the other one set up with the rim thickness gage. This way I can speed up the measurement process. Take any ammo and sort for great groupings of .25 to .50 at 50 yards fired from a good target rifle. Just a note that if you use the cheap ammunition, you will need a lot of it to find alike groupings for all three measurements. I would like to hear of your process to shoot .22 LR ammo with great groups. Thank you Midway for great products.

Great product. I measure ...

Great product. I measure a few to find the most common thickness; I then sort those in a pile for my comp shooting, and set my scope. I sort the ones higher and lower than the most common into two different piles and use those to plink.

The Hornady Rim Thickness ...

The Hornady Rim Thickness Gauge works very well. I was surprised at to amount of variation in thickness I found. I sorted 600 rounds of 22 Magnum Ammo from 3 different Manufacturers. About 1/2 to 2/3 of each Manufacturer's were close to each other. The rest were up to 0.008" to 0.010" difference. The Variations looked like a Bell Curve with +/- 0.010" as the range. The center of the curve was different for each Manufacturer, by 0.003" to 0.006". I'll always buy several boxes at a time, sort them, keep the best for hunting, and use the rest for plinking.
