My 13 year old son ...

My 13 year old son received a black powder percussion cap and ball 50 cal rifle for his birthday, along with a box of speer round balls (which I put on a caliper and confirmed sizes of .489 -.491). When we went to the range to try out his new rifle, he was able to shoot right out of the box a group of about one inch at twenty-five yards, and than pronounced he was ready to go hunting with his new rifle. I (his dad) reluctantly took him hunting with his new rifle not really expecting much of anything except maybe to get off a shot or two at a jack rabbit. Well, as fate would have it, after almost three hours of hunting, we surprized a 100-125 pound hog that had bedded down not more than twenty yards from the bushes that we were working. As soon as the hog saw us, it stood up and presented a classic broadside shot. My son shot the hog through the shoulder and the hog dropped to the ground in a cloud of smoke and dust. By the time my son got "Old Betsey" reloaded, the hog was dead. When we skinned out the hog, we found the ball had penetrated through the front shoulder of the hog, taking out the aorta, and lodged in the off shoulder and neck area. I could not believe what I had just witnessed, and came away a believer in black powder hunting. The only reason that I did not rate this a five star product, is that I find it hard to rate something as simple as a round lead ball five stars, but I suppose you could make a good case for five stars!

I couldn't be happier ...

I couldn't be happier with the results of these round balls. Speer has produced a fine projectile, one that flies well and prints great on target. What a relief in not having to locate the sprue on the ball since there are none.

Patched ball gets a lot ...

Patched ball gets a lot of bad press as far as hunting, but on a WMA deer hunt, I carred a Traditions .50 cal Deerhunter I built from a kit. The load was 110 gr Pyro RS, and the patched Hornady .490 ball. I shot a hog broadside at 80 yards that went down like it had been hit by a truck. When field dressing the hog, the shot hit just behind the shoulder, about 2" below the spine, exit hole was roughly an inch in diameter. You can't ask for more than that from a smokepole, and this ball is very accurate in the 1:48 Traditions.

These swaged round balls ...

These swaged round balls worked very well in my .50 cal. rifle. Accuracy improved especially when using .015" thick blue and white striped pillow ticking patch.
