Product Information

The Caldwell Rock Front Shooting Rest includes features that precision shooters have used for years to make their shooting quicker and easier. This rest has an extra wide stance for stability. An adjustable cradle securely holds a filled medium front shooting rest bag (included). The rest has a forend stop for quick reacquisition of your target. All rams are steel and 7/8" in diameter. Adjustable hard point feet are included for leveling the rest.

The guy claiming this rest wobbles must have put it together incorrectly. Properly assembled, with everything tightened down, and the "feet" adjusted, there's really no way this thing will wobble.I don't have experience with any of the $200+ rifle rests, but I'm not sure what they could possibly offer besides the machined parts looking nicer than the cast pieces of "The Rock."I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. As mentioned by others, I had a little trouble screwing everything together, as the holes were a little undersized or Caldwell was using dull taps.

Well constructed & sturdy, a good value. I like the large, wide, footprint. Works well for bolt guns but is not good for AR's or any semi with a long magazine. I know why the layout of the rest is the way it is, so it won't rock under recoil. The other reason it has this layout is so that you can set it closer to the front of the bench. This reasoning is logical. However, in my opinion, it is completely backwards & there is no way to reverse the rest if you wanted. You could remove the fore end stop & turn the rest around but then the lock "screw" would be hard to reach. Overall, a good rest for the money. I would give it 5 stars if it could be configured the way the user wanted. This could be done with some minor mods during manufacture.

Perhaps I got a defective rest but I have to disagree with most reviews here. The rest is solid as everyone says but the sewing of the bag is substandard. I didn't abuse mine and within three trips to the range, the bag that cradles the rifle ripped a seam and out came hundreds of plastic hollow pieces. I collected them up and reinserted them the best I could and then reinforced the entire seam by sewing with wax thread. It's a heavy stable rest but be wary of the sewing!

If you are wondering if the sandbags just aren't cutting it then just get you one of these. It is heavy and solid and the screw-retractable spike feet keep it from moving AT ALL. I purchased the universal deluxe rear shooting rest bag too. A great combo. Too bad the problem was me and not the sandbags :-)

Love this rest!!! Bought it to replace a Caldwell Steady Rest NXT. There is no comparision. All metal construction provides rock solid stability. All height adjustments are smooth and precise. And it's customizable. Came with the medium size front bag that fits all my sporting rifles. When I shoot my oversize target rifle I just switch it out to the wide bag. When I move from a wood bench to concrete I just insert the optional rubber feet to keep it from sliding around. All in all this is a very well built rest and I expect it to last for years. If you plan to do a lot of bench shooting forget those plastic rests. This is the one you want.

I`ve had mine for severl years and I Give it 10 stars" Its solid as a Rock" just like the name inplys , Level Is Corect" doesn`t move around on a carpeted or wood bench . Those that Say , it move`s around on concreat benches , well put you a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet on your bench , that`s what I do , besides it protect`s your other equipment and guns as well . Mine came with the case , and the delux leather bag , which All fit`s Nicely in that Case . Grease the main shaft with white lithum grease , set it up , level it , Tighten the lock nut`s on the legs , Lock the main shaft screw , and It Won`t Move Around , I don`t care what you do with it . Beat`s the Heck outa using a buncha sand bags that Won`t stay in place . It`s not the Best set up for AR long clip rifles or lever action , although Caldwell makes some Very fine rest set up`s for those types of rifles .

A good value for the money. The "level" bubble is barely glued on and will come off over time, but I'm not sure how accurate it was anyway. My front bag has started to tear on one seam. The rest will wobble unless you clamp it tight with the locking lever. If you actually use the leg height adjustments to level the rest, they can be very difficult to work with.

This is a good shooting rest however it needs to be beefed up because it is too light. If you own one of these, this is what you can do to make it better. Remove top and use 60 grit sandpaper to rough up the cavities on the bottom of the tripod. When you're done sanding, rinse with water to remove loose material. While the tripod is drying, go to a tire shop and ask them for some scrap lead that's used to balance wheels. Ask for the lead that comes in strips with the adhesive backing. On your way home pick up a tube of Loctite Power Grab. This is a construction adhesive that's applied with a caulking gun. When you get home break off lead segments so they fit inside the cavaties on the bottom of the tripod. Set aside and fill cavaties with Power Grab. Smear Power Grab on both sides of lead strips and insert into cavaties. Let dry for 24 hours. Remove excess lead with a file so the legs do not wobble on a level surface. This is an inexpensive way to improve the stability of the Rock. Good shooting!

This rest was very stable and would be almost perfect, except for the Elevation Adjustment. The large elevation screw was machined so crooked that when turned, sense the top rested on the screw, the Rest would rock from side to side as the screw wabbled up the center post. The BR model looks like a better buy due to it's Ball Bearing construction. However, once I tightened the locking screw, it was solid and worked GREAT...until I needed to adjust it. This was however a problem that could be fixed on a lathe with little difficulty. This rest was EASY to assemble in a matter of minutes, But filling the bag was a bit time consuming

I just received my new Caldwell Rock rest and am very pleased. It was well packaged, with all parts appropriately separated and bagged. After reading several other reviews, and much to my surprise, the machining was very good to excellent. All threads were clean and well cut, and I experienced no galling or binding whatsoever. This product is an excellent value. One note, the bag is too narrow for BR, but fine for sporters. Everything else is top notch.
