The Lee Auto Prime XR Hand Priming Tool is the updated version of a time tested classic. The XR has been designed to work with every brand of primer and features the patent pending "elevator pin" which safely separates a single primer from the tray reducing the likelihood of tray detonation. The XR uses the same body and shellholders as the original but the rest of the components have been improved or replaced. Some of the upgrades include an unbreakable comfort curve lever and large square trays that accept all brands of primer boxes with slide on covers for large or small primers.

Special Notes:

This tool requires the use of Lee Auto Prime Shellholders (sold separately). It will not work with standard shellholders.

Material on the collar of tool must be removed to prime Winchester Short Magnum brass and Winchester Super Shot Magnum brass (#5 shellholder).

After reading several of the reviews I was hesitant to order the auto-prime XR. But, it was less than twenty bucks so... what the heck.Sure glad I didn't pay attention to the nay Sayers! I prime a ton of .223, 9mm and .40 S&W cases some weeks. The original auto-prime frequently gave me a problem when multiple primers became stacked and jammed at the ram. Even had one instance where the primer was turned on its side.The biggest difficulty I had with the XR was figuring out how to change the pan to small primer. The learning curve was about 10 primers before I figured out exactly how the XR operated.Let me say, "The Auto-Prime XR is substantially superior to the old Auto-Prime, and much faster also".No more possibility of primers jamming at the ram! The channel leading to the seating ram proves to be one of the great improvements. The XR picks the first primer from the single row trough and positions it ready for the seating ram. After seating less than 100 primers I was much more comfortable with the XR than the original model.Lee Precision has done a great job with the new model. Try it, you'll love it.

Most Helpful Negative Review

The negatives outweigh ...

The negatives outweigh the positives for this product. The square tray is a big improvement over the round tray. However the cover for this tray is more cumbersome to install and if done wrong one corner will be too high, allowing primers in the tray to flip over during use. The feed system requires that the tray be held at a consistent angle to keep primers feeding into the queue. The old AutoPrime tool just required a slight jiggle to keep primers feeding. The new feed system has two pins instead of one, so there are twice as many parts to go wrong. The original AutoPrime had a hole in the cover for adding primers to the tray. This one only allows primers to be added at the point where they are fed to the plunger which is more cumbersome to do since the tool must be tilted to allow space in the queue for the primer. The biggest negative is the lack of leverage for setting the primers. The original AutoPrime had a positive feel when a primer was set, required at most moderate effort and you knew when the primer was set. This tool does not have a positive feel and excessive force is required to set primers. In some cases I found that primers were not set recessed even with the maximum force I could exert with two hands. The original AutoPrime tool is superior to this one when it comes to setting primers.

Big Improvement!

I was having problems with primer feeding and stacking in my old Lee Auto-Prime and would damage about 2 - 4 primers for every 100 that I loaded. This was driving me nuts!

The new Auto-Prime addresses the problems that I was having and I just completed loading 250 straight 5.56 primers with no problems whatsoever. The mechanism to feed a single primer works great!

Be sure to read the instructions to get the hang of how this new one is somewhat different from the older model. Once you understand it, you will like it.

I put my old Auto-Prime away for an emergency backup but I will depend on this new one into the future to do all my 5.56, 9mm amd .30-06 priming.

This Auto-Prime XR is, in my opinion, a big improvement over the older model.

Lee needs to go back to original

The original Auto Prime was great.... sure, the lever wore out but I bought two in 18 years and loaded tens of thousands of rounds using the original and never had a primer go off....
The new Auto Prime is AWFUL, it won't feed primers, I've had two go off already and the primers contantly double feed and get jammed.... the new Auto Prime is the worst product Lee has ever put out!

Terrible product! Did they even test this thing before it went out?
Flips primers! Won't feed properly! Lifts the plastic cover up and stacks primers. Then you have to open it up, reset, and start over. Takes twice the time as the OLD ROUND ONE. What was wrong with that design?
Why are you still offering this piece?

I have a lot of LEE's stuff, and I'd give most everything 4 stars. I cannot express strongly enough in words - DO NOT waste your money on this LEE product.

Clearly a step down from the old primer

I bought this as a replacement only because I could not get a replacement for the original after the lever finally broke. Even though the original was made of cheap pot metal, it held up for many thousands of rounds and is worth paying for a replacement. I agree that the Rube Goldberg feed mechanism is a pain and there is no comfortable way to operate the lever. You have to continuously rock it back and forth to feed the primers which often flip the wrong way and the lid tends to work loose causing more upsets to the primers.

I really wish Lee would simply sell replacement parts to the old hand primer. This thing works, but hand priming is now a chore rather than a breeze.

It is functional, but the ...

It is functional, but the hassle is far greater than the utility. I really liked the previous version of the Auto Prime and was really excited to see that they had beefed up the handle since that was the only flaw the previous version had, in my opinion. The square feed tray was a nice addition. From there, everything else is more like a Rube Goldberg contraption than a useful tool. First you have to deal with the fiddly lid on the tray. Then you have to hold the tool just right and shake it around to get a primer in position. Then you have to hope and pray that it will go up the silly little lift without catching an edge and getting flipped or ejected onto the floor. Likewise the movement to the actual priming ram. I primed 100 cases with it and said "no more". What would have taken 10 minutes with the previous version took more than 30 and raised my blood pressure several points. I switched to the RCBS version and though it has issues as well, those issues only relate to changing shell holders, not the function or ease of use once it's set up.

This product works but is disappointment after using the old Lee tool. It is over engineered, hard to set primers, throws them on the floor, cover falls off at comers and primers are on the floor again. Please bring back the original, it worked great!

Don't waste your time or money on this piece of junk. I wish Lee would bring back their original manual (all metal) hand held "one at a time" priming tool. I've still got mine I bought some 30+ years ago and it's still going strong. Come on Lee, you can do better than this cheesy junk! Most everything else Lee makes is top notch, why this? I breaks the top covers constantly. Zero stars if possible.

Believe the overall rating. The tabs on the plastic cover all broke by the second use and the small primer assembly continually flips primers or pops them out of the feeding chute. As a long time Lee product user I am disappointed with this product. Time to try a Hornady or RCBS hand primer.

I bought a Lee Auto Prime a couple months ago and I have used it for several hundred rounds and I really like this too. Well the other day I had a failure of the link between the handle and the priming ram. I wrote Lee an e-mail and explained what happened. They asked a couple questions and requested a picture and in 2 days the new part was at my door free of charge. Lee stands behind their products and I am pleased to be back in production again.
