Good product in my gun

Went to the range today with a cylinder choke, a rifled choke and several different brand of slugs. Shot some Remington High velocity sluggers using the cylinder choke and they were not grouping well from my gun at that distance. I then screwed in a rifled choke tube and shot 3" Hastings Sabots, 2 3/4 Winchester BRI Sabots, Winchester rifled slugs, and standard velocity Remington rifled slug "Sluggers". Of all the rounds fired, the best group from my shotgun was with the Remington Sluggers. Best group was three into 3.5 inches at 100yds from the bench when shot through a Carlson's rifled choke tube.

I have a plain 20 gauge ...

I have a plain 20 gauge 870 with vented rib barrel and IC choke. After 2 shots of learning how to aim exactly with only a bead as a sight the last 3 rounds made a 3 inch group at 50 yards. Not bad since I will be using these in thick brush and won't see a deer past 80 yards. Performance wise: Shot at a pallet of drywall, leaves massive wound channel. These leave bigger and more pronounced wound channels than +P .45Colt PDX ammo, and those can knock a deer down and leave it down. The kick was surprisingly mild, and for a gun meant for bird hunting I can accurately take a deer under 100 yards now without any modification to the gun itself, I just had to modify how I aimed the gun. Extra note, when the air was 29 degrees out these things left a smoke trail 30 yards long and got comments that it looked like a rocket just got launched from my shotgun.

The Remington "Slugger" ...

The Remington "Slugger" 20 Gauge ammo is one of the more rapidly expanding rounds out there. Fired into wet-newsprint, penetration amounted to a little over 1-ft. Cavitation in the first 6-inches was absolutely massive. Actually, the first layers of wet-newsprint were heavily pulverized. At the end of the slug's channel, I found a small piece of lead resting on the still nose-first, plastic wad. The 5/8-ounce Remington slug had near-entirely fragmented during penetration. It's probably worth noting the Remington slug weighs-in at less than Winchester and Federal's offerings, which come in at 3/4-ounce (328-grains). With the Remington's lower sectional density, however, along with its relatively deep hollow point, the Remington 5/8-ounce "Slugger" is a suitable load where excessive penetration might be an issue (ex. home defense). Should be fine for whitetail at woods-ranges; but, I'd personally favor the heavier 3/4-ounce (328-grain) hollow points from Federal and Winchester.
