I bought a set of these ...

I bought a set of these dies to load .380 bullets. The expander (marked .379 but measures .378) does not expand the case enough causing the case to bulge when seating the bullet. Going to contact rcbs and see what they have to say.

I bought this set to reload for my H&R. Since factory WW ammo will not stabilize in my rifle. But guess what if I size, expand, and load a 0.379 lfc it chamber the round. So I leave off the size step it and they will. Beats all I've ever heard tell of, go figure.

I use these successfully ...

I use these successfully for my H&R 1871 Target Model .38-55, which shoots well with soft .377 cast bullets, as well as .379 or .380 cast bullets. It does not stabilize .375-.377 jacketed bullets or even hard-cast .377s, and they keyhole badly.As others have found, the large diameter bullets work best with Starline brass, which is thinner-walled than Winchester brass. Last week I loaded .380s in fire-formed Winchester brass and think they would have shot fine, but since two of them lacked case neck tension, I partially-sized the loaded rounds. . .and apparently sized down the bullets, which didn't engage the rifling. I'll fire the remainder and try loading & firing the .380s without resizing.These RCBS Cowboy dies come with two expander plugs, and the .379 works beautifully with my .380 bullets. I have good success with .32SWL Cowboy dies and RCBS dies in other calibers--they are high quality.

The Cowboy dies came with ...

The Cowboy dies came with two expanding plugs to help match different bullets, ie cast or jacketed. Performance is good just as one would expect from RCBS products. 90% of dies I own are RCBS and past performance is the reason I continue to use RCBS almost exclusively.

I, too, have lots of RCBS ...

I, too, have lots of RCBS products and generally recommend them. This is the first set of RCBS Cowboy dies I've used and was very disappointed. The problem is with the expander die. Yes, they give you 2 expander plugs. But the die body interior diameter is huge (measured .576", while the brass case max. is .413"), and does nothing to align the case with the expander plug as it's run up into the die. In my case I was prepping 50 pieces of Winchester brass. When wiping the cases after the expanding operation, I noticed on 12 of the 50 the expanded portion bulged out one side of the case, while the opposite side showed no expansion. Looking closer, the plug had gone into the case cocked, which is how the bullet would have seated. We're not talking a couple of thousandths -- it was really visible to the naked eye! That would do terrible things to the round's accuracy, if you could even get the round to chamber.I'm ordering a Lyman "M" expander to replace the RCBS expander in this set.

I bought a Winchester ...

I bought a Winchester commemorative rifle in 38-55 Caliber some years back and decided to try my hand at reloading. I went with a Rock Chucker Supreme press from RCBS and a set of their 38-55 Cowboy dies. My rifle shoots .377 inch bullets with the greatest accuracy so I routinely use the .376 expander plug supplied with the die set. I have now loaded 7 different bullets, some jacketed but the majority lead cast. The dies deliver a finished round that looks every bit as good as Winchester factory ammunition or Black Hills Cowboy ammunition. I do, however use a Lee Factory Crimp die to finish all shells that I reload and use the RCBS seater die for only the seating operation. I was so happy with the quality that I also purchased a set of the .357 Magnum Cowboy dies for pistol and Cowboy rifle rounds. They also work flawlessly.I have read the review that speaks about off-center loads. I wonder if the die was set up properly. The interior of the die is slightly tapered and could give off-center results if the expanding operation was being performed too low in the die. I have never experienced this problem.

The very best dies made ...

The very best dies made for the 38-55, period! Other brands are simply 375 Winchester dies that are marked 38-55, and are made for .375" bullets. The RCBS Cowboy dies are made to load larger .379-.381" bullets which are correct for the 38-55. While you are at it, order some Starline 38-55 brass, which is thinner than other brands, allowing for use of larger slugs to chamber easier in Winchester and Marlin rifles.

Many 38-55 dies have an ...

Many 38-55 dies have an expander plug for a .375 bullet. My Marlin shoots a .380 to .381 bullet. This die set comes with two expander plugs, labeled .379 and .376. Mine miked .001 smaller. The larger is right for my bullets and the smaller is useful for compressing black powder. The quality and finish are excellent. No problems.
