Birchwood Casey's Perma Blue has been the pro's choice for years in touching up nicks and scratches. Easy to use, just clean the metal surface and apply. Birchwood Casey recommends using the Cleaner-Degreaser (410-522) for cleaning the metal before application.

Notes:

Used to touch up scratches and worn spots, or to completely re-blue most guns.

Perma Blue will give a non-streaky, even blue/black finish to steel (except stainless).

All parts to be blued must be free of any rust and oil.

Apply without heat with a swab (Q-Tip).

Two applications are normally needed.

I followed all the directions on a bayonet for a model 44 mosin nagant. I wanted it to be pitch black and did it exactly to the instructions. Last instruction should be an optional direction. I rub all the bluing off with steel wool but did it again and came out extrememly nice. I didn't think I would do any more than the bayonet and barrel but after the convience of the two products bluing and cleaner degreaser I did triggerguard and all metal of dark color. The other thing is make sure you get oil on your blue right after you get the way you want or something will dry wrong, rust or even discolor which is a downer.

In that this is a cold ...

In that this is a cold blue product, and relatively inexpensive it's hard to complain too fiercely about it. I am fairly satisfied with the product as I used it with the understanding that it isn't an ultimate solution. I did not use this product expressly as directed, and I resorted to heating the parts I was bluing with a butane torch to roughly 200 F and applying the bluing to the metal then, it deepened the color somewhat, and has perhaps made it more durable?I feel that with judicious metal preparation, and attention to detail, it is possible to obtain a satisfactory finish if one merely requires a finish of some sort that is easily accomplished at home with little equipment. And as long as expectations of durability aren't on a par with similar expectations of a factory or professional finish.

I bought this stuff in a kit with degreaser and cleaner. I put it on a muzzleloader kit barrel and followed the instructions as closly as possible.
It took four hours for me to get it dark enough and It looked good at first. Then at the first shoot I went to it wore off 6inches down from the muzzle (from loading) and 4inches up from the touch-hole (from cleaning). The worn areas looked more like a galvanized nail than a newly finnished barrel.

I've used this product several times as both a touch-up application and to blue replacement barrels. Complete degreasing is an absolute must, and expect to put on at least 3 or 4 applications (with fresh pad each time). Card with fine steel wool. Oil with Hoppes or Remoil immediately, and be prepared to re-oil regularly. The rust prevention is in the oil, not the surface bluing. Is is as good as hot bluing? Of course not. Is it safer, cheaper, and adequate for your daily driver? Has been for me.

I assume those that rated this product poorly did not fully follow the directions and good advice given in the direction pamphlet. I am extremely pleased with my results on my Mosin Nagant barrel. I took my time, followed the directions and got an awesome result. Take your time, apply multiple coats, and cure it overnight with a coat of Kroil...I couldn't be happier.

You must clean the metal very well. Heating is not required.Basically the blue solution reacts with exposed metal to "blue" it, or rather oxidize it in a manner where it appears darker than exposed steel.I purchased this small bottle for the purpose of touching up my magazines and magazine followers. It worked very well in "blacking" the surface.I have not tried blueing an entire rifle or handgun, just small parts/portions of the rifle with great success.

I used Birchwood/Casey rust and blueing remover with 3 grades of steel wool to prep an old 12 gauge. Worked great. I then used Perma Blue. I applied it 3 times over two days and it got darker each time. This was my first project and I'm happy with the result. I later show the old shotgun and he asked me to do his. It was covered with fine hard rust. Three days later my nieghbor was delighted. I think you should try it after all it's cheap. Good Luck

It was all right. It wasn't what I expected. It is a lot lighter in color than the Outers Gun Blue. I had to apply it to the gun 6 different times to get the color blue I wanted on my Mauser but with the Outers I only applied it once.

It was easy to use but my results weren`t as good as with the paste. When I tried a second coat it seemed to take off the first coat and didn`t darken any. Maybe it would work better with a little heat or letting it dry longer before reapplying.

I've used this to blue worn spots on a Mosin-Nagant and a Chinese SKS. I used 98% isopropynol to degrease. I applied two coats to both pieces and sanded with very fine steel wool between coats. I was quite pleased with the results. Was it the same as a new Colt Python? Heck no, but for what it cost and what I was putting it on, it was great. It is very difficult to see where I re-blued on both pieces.
