Product Information

Barrel Blanks are made from premium quality 4140 Chrome Moly Steel then precision-reamed, button rifled, stress relieved and air gauged to + or - .0002". Furnished "in the white" these blanks will require threading to the action of your choice, crowning, chambering and finishing by a qualified gunsmith. The proper break-in procedure requires cleaning after each shot for the first five shots. Then cleaning after every five shots for the next 50 shots. This particular barrel has 8 lands and grooves.

With two kids in college and a third about to start, my childhood dream of hunting Africa is not going to happen anytime soon. However, no reason why I can't go out and practice on some feral hogs with an elephant-gun. That was the reasoning with my current .458 Winchester Magnum build. This is my second barrel from this maker, the first being a 22-250 mounted on a Czech action that shot sub-MOA from round 1. This .458 barrel looks just as good. It needed a bit more external sanding/polish, but the rifling is pristine. Some notes for first-timers like me: These barrels are made from relatively soft metal ... meaning they sand AND finish-ream very quickly. When hand-reaming the 22-250 barrel the go-gauge would not fit one moment, then after just two more turns of the reamer the no-go-guage would fit (accuracy is still superb). Expecting the same when finishing this .458 barrel. Also ... different actions have ever so slightly different threads. With the Czech action the barrel could be screwed on and off with ease. I had to use thread-lock to make sure it stayed in place. With the German action I am using for this .458 WM build the barrel would turn on easily for about half the distance, then required a barrel wrench to finish. All threads were clean and lubed, its just the way the precision-minded Germans made their receivers so the barrels wouldn't loosen in combat. As actions and cash permit, I also plan to make 6.5x55, 338x06 and a 9.3x62 from these barrels. If you want to build a rifle in a relatively unique caliber for hunting, these are a great choice. I know nothing of bench-rest shooting, but guessing the softness of these barrels would require frequent replacement/setting back.

I built this rifle for myself 3 years ago on a VZ24 action in a B&C Medalist stock with full aluminum bedding block. A Bold Optima trigger. The barrel was shortened to 22" The load is 300gr Barnes TSX with 65.0gr of RL 7 and CCI 250 primer. It shoots 3 shots touching @ 100yds I have taken several bears and numerous deer. For the price you could not ask for a better or more accurate barrel

Have this barrel installed on a Czech VZ24 action dated 1944. With no glass bedding and using the original military trigger it grouped cast linotype 300 grain flat nose bullets in a 3-inch group at 100 yards at approx. 2100fps. This was the first time it was fired so the barrel is barely broken in! With jacketed bullets, a Timney trigger and a good bedding job I'm sure the groups will shrink considerably!!

I installed one of these on a vz-24 action and am extremely happy. Using Hornady 4502 350gr. Round Nose bullets and IMR3031 powder, I can easily get minute-of-angle accuracy - I don't think you'll be disappointed either!

An outstanding product! A gunsmith friend built one on a Mauser for me. He said the chambering job brought no complications. The barrel took parkerizing well. The rifle shoots just over an inch at 100 yards with my handloads (300 grain Hornady bullets)- very acceptable for deer. This is the fourth of these barrels that I have used for various projects and all have turned out fantastic.

This barrel seems to be very accurate. No fouling problems. On my Mauser with a Boyds stock and Nikon scope and sling it weighs about 11lbs., and recoil with 500gr Factory Hornady ammo is comparable to my .300 Mag.
