RCBS has been making some of the best reloading equipment for over 60 years. Their 2-Die sets are known in many reloading circles for their high-quality. Each 2-Die Set includes a full length sizer die has an expander-decapping unit to remove the spent primer while expanding the case mouth. Vent holes prevent case damage caused by trapped air or excessive lubricant. The seater die includes a bullet seater plug and built-in roll or taper crimp as appropriate for the particular cartridge. RCBS again make another fine product. One important thing to remember (which I learned the hard way), is not to use this for military brass. Use only shells that are stamped "223 Remington." I damaged mine in the first year I started to reload. Otherwise, I only use RCBS reloading products because of the quality.

My satisfactory use of RCBS dies for other cartridges meant I had no hesitation in getting a set for 223. The full length sizer performs well, and its deprimer is long enough to set for very positive spent primer removal indeed. The bullet seating die, however, is atrocious. The part that engages the bullet tip is just a small bit of threaded rod with a conical divot. The rod is much smaller in diameter than the die walls accepting the case. This leaves a large gap for a bullet tip to miss the divot and wedge into the gap. The divot is considerably smaller in diameter than the bullets, giving even more chance for a bullet tip to not engage properly. The upshot is that if the bullet is not perfectly lined up, it often results in the bullet being pushed entirely inside the case (full of powder).In an attempt to salvage things, I polished the business end of the stem thoroughly and applied a small touch of lube, the idea being that a smooth, lubed surface would result in less disengagements. It did not help.I have loaded many tens of thousands of rounds over the years for some 15 different cartridges. I've used dies from all the major manufacturers. The RCBS bullet seating die for 223 is hands down the worst die for any loading operation I've performed. I cannot recommend the set until they address the serious shortcomings present.

I have all brands of Dies. RCBS are easy to use if you can read and understand the English language. Their customer service is first rate. And I've never had a problem with their dies on any caliber I've owned. I have 3 sets of .223, one being the Small Base set. I have Lee, Dillon 650, Lyman and Redding reloading equipment as well. RCBS is equal and exceeds many other brands. Huerter's is probably the least reliable of my many sets of dies.

I am new to reloading but I bought these dies along with the RCBS Supreme Master Press and only had one mishap. Once everything was dialed in no problems made 5 dummy rounds and came out great for a beginner. The seater worked great with the 40gr hp dummy rounds. Now to adjust for the crimp.

I have used RCBS dies for over 35 years now, and these dies live up to what I have learned to expect from RCBS. And that is, if I do my part in adjusting them, they do their part in loading my ammo to spec. Most of the reviews I have read on this site and many others have to do with a seating problem which I believe is covered very well by one of the other reviewers here about the bullet being caught between the side of the die and the seating plug. Screw the spindle OUT..put in a (DUMMY round with no primer or powder in it, I think it is safer. I have made one for each caliber I load)Run the press ram up into the die and HOLD IT THERE. THEN screw IN the seating stem until it hits the loaded round. Don't seat it hard..just let it tap onto the loaded round. Then load your REAL AMMO, after the first one is done, put a caliper on the round and see what the Over All Length is, if it needs to be adjusted screw the seating plug in or out a 1/8 of a turn until it hits the length you want..Then tighten it down and your good to go. With over 40 sets of different dies from RCBS, including many wildcats, I can firmly state they are a top quality product that will last you a life time, if you take care of them like you would your new firearm.Good luck to you all.

Finally, I have found a sizer die that does not set my shoulder back too far. I have used Redding and Lee dies. Redding would set the shoulder back too far degrading accuracy no matter what die adjustment, Needing to buy an expensive shellholder set to fix. Lee dies are ok but are inconsistent and neck was loose causing bullets to move out in an autoloader. Seater die is good, Does not seat crooked or crush cases like others have said. Marks bullet tips though. No need for the small base dies for me in a 223 Wlyde. Everything I have that works consistently and accurately has the name RCBS on it.Thanks Midway and RCBS!

This is for you fellas having trouble with the seating die. I too, was having trouble in particular with hollow points getting marred or otherwise destroyed. For some reason RCBS dies are coming out of the factory with the inverted cone threaded too far into the die(I'm referring to the threaded stud that sticks out of the top of the die). When it's in too far, it creates a gap between the cone itself, and the side-wall of the die. This gap is what's destroying your bullets and brass ;) Just loosen the nut on top, and then thread that shaft OUT of the die a quarter inch or more if needed... At that point you can run a bullet up to the base of the die and let it fall against the inside wall while continuing to seat the bullet. I did this on 2 separate sets of RCBS .223 dies, and both are functioning correctly now. For me the flat-base bullets are seating just as easy as a boat-tail. Happy Hunting...

Decapping unit has loads ...

Decapping unit has loads of play, not centered at all. It also wiggles around, so every time a case tries to go in it gets caught. You get what you get for going cheap, I got a Dillon set and never looked back.

Dies did not meet my ...

Dies did not meet my expectation. RCBS has a good reputation and I have over 20 sets of RCBS dies. When I was not able to get expected results with this die I bought the RCBS master gaging tool. Then began to check for proper neck and bullet run-out. Necks were out as far as .006" and bullet run-out .011". RCBS being known for customer service, I thought would be more than willing to help. But when I called I spoke to Bryan and he refused to listen or believe the dies were over specs. On my third call I spoke to Alice who was helpful and since then I have sent the dies to be tested and hopefully replaced. I believe quality control and customer service are not meeting RCBS standards.

I had high hopes for this die set, as the .357mag set I have from RCBS is a great product. These, however, only disappoint. In particular, the seating die is nothing but a threaded stem with a hollow end inside the die itself. Seating .223 bullets with this die is an exercise in frustration, and the stem only mangles hollow-points. Compared to the offerings of Lee, Redding, or Hornady, these dies are simply inadequate. Look elsewhere for your .223 needs.

Could be better for ...

Could be better for price. I was disappointed with the seating die when seating 40gr V-Max Bullets. It continued to mangle the tip unless it was perfectly straight going in. I will be switching to a Deluxe set of Lee dies which I have had much better luck with.
