For what seems like ...

For what seems like forever I have used an old Thumler's Model A Tumbler. This is a belt driven rubber bin with a small electric motor. The biggest hassle is stretching the band that holds the lid on. I decided to get into at least the twentieth century and upgraded to a Lyman Classic 1200. I was not overwhelmed with the initial results so I did a comparison test. I used 25 rounds of old, once fired 7.62 military brass in each bin. The brass was identical and from the same original group. I used about 4 cups of corn cob/rouge media in each bin. The Lyman notes recommend two to four hours of tumble time depending on the condition of the brass. I ran both tumblers for two hours. I sifted out the media and set the brass in a colander and blew the dust off with compressed air. I laid each batch out on a clean white diaper under normal household lighting. There was no comparison. The old tumbler really did a superior job. I asked my wife and daughter to observe just in case my eyesight is faulty. They felt the results were not even close. The Thumler produced a cleaner cartridge case that looked like polished brass. The 1200 took off the powder residue but barely touched the brass discoloration. I must admit; however, the Lyman lid with one simple threaded nut is a whole lot easier to tighten. I think I'll use both of them.

A good tumbler for 400 ...

A good tumbler for 400 cases range of pistol rounds. Performance is good even after an hour use - results in shiny like new brass even w/o brass moly cleaners. However, for best convenience, I would recommend you get the 1200 Auto Flo model. The auto media and case separation of the auto flo beats any system. You don't need to buy a sifter and you don't have to be a gopher digging for cases in the media. And the price is the same too!

As a basic case tumbler ...

As a basic case tumbler this is a decent unit. I run it on a piece of closed cell camping foam mattress padding to keep it in one spot, and lower the noise. It could use a dust cover when running to lower the noise and lessen any lead exposure possibilities, but these things are improvised easily. It cleans the brass well with either corncob or walnut media.

I have had mine 30+ years and it is still running great. I will say it does tend to move and is loud so I run mine in another room on a hard floor for good cooling of the motor.

I bought one of these ...

I bought one of these when they first came out, so many years ago I can't remember. I have been completely pleased with it. It has done thousands of cases through the years with excellent results. I forgot about it one time and ran it for about 24 hours. It almost polished the nickel plating off of some .44 cases! The point is, it does a great job of polishing and don't forget to stop it after about three hours. A product that works well and lasts for decades. I couldn't ask for anything better.

I bought my Lyman Turbo ...

I bought my Lyman Turbo 1200 in 1987 and have used it to clean my hunting loads and my Silhouette loads and other cases that I use for target. This item has never let me down and does a fantastic job cleaning the cases using corn cob media I have no dislikes on this item as something that works this long and built well, which I regard as high quality. It is something I can recommend without reservation.
