Im 63 and have used Hoppes #9 since I received my first 22. I have used other products on occasion but always return to this product. It gets the job done and is easy on the firearm and few precautions. It takes care of fowling in pistols, rifles and shotguns. I shoot NRA matches at the club and am particular and fastidious about cleaning and have removed some really serious leading from stainless revolvers with #9. As for copper fowling in rifles, it works just fine. Its true there are faster solvents but the ammonia is hard on the shooter and can be hard on the firearm if not used correctly. If allowed to soak in and then reapplied Hoppes will remove any fowling. It may not be the fastest but it works just fine.

This is a classic all pourpose solvent. It works OK for a lot of things but isn't really great on anything. If all you have is powder fouling, plastic (from wads), or light cleaning this is fine. It does NOT work very well on serious copper or lead fouling. Added bonus is the classic smell that brings back the memories.

Unmistakable Aroma

Even though I use a lot of more modern, high-tech, or specific-purpose solvents, I will always keep a bottle of Hoppe's #9 on the bench. It's just one of those smells that takes me back to happy days of childhood. It's right up there with Mom's apple dumplings and Granddad's Old Spice aftershave. I mainly use Kroil and Montana Extreme products these days, but #9 is still the fragrance that says "Welcome Home." I realize this review is useless from a product performance perspective, but nothing else in MidwayUSA's catalog enables time travel with a 2 ounce bottle.

I have used good old #9 for at least 50 years! I'll admit, even though I have been satisfied with its results, every time a new bore cleaner hit the market claiming to do the impossible, I was a "sucker" and bought it only to be disappointed. I always buy my #9 in the 16 oz. bottles and my only gripe with the folks at Hoppes would be that in the past few years it has come in a poor quality plastic bottle that seems to deteriorate (collapse) over time from the exposure to the chemicals used in manufacturing #9. Lucky for me, I had saved my old dark brown glass bottles and when I buy a new bottle, I immediately transfer it into one of the older glass bottles for storage, as I use a high quality plastic 4 oz. bottle with a flip up spout to apply the #9 to my brushes and patches.

I have been using this product for over thirty years. Over a period of time, I have tried a few other solvents, just to see how they worked, but always keep coming back to Hoppes #9. Definitely old school, but it works great!

This is a very good all around gun cleaning solvent. There are better specific application solvents out there but you will also pay more for them. Works well in the bore and on residue else where on my Ruger SR9. Great value solvent.

I have tried many different products for bore cleaning, but Hoppe's is still my favorite. It might not act quite as quickly as some of the newer, stronger solvents, but if you run a very wet half-patch through the bore one time and let it set an hour or two you'll be amazed at the color of the next patch you run through! I don't believe in doing a lot of scrubbing. Just running several very wet patches over a period of several hours will remove copper as well as any of the newer, harsher products, with no scrubbing or brushing whatsoever.

I pour mine into a plastic spray bottle. Spritz my Rem 1100 gas works and wipe it down after every 100 shots to keep it shooting.

Great for your: guns, rifles and scatterguns! It's old school cleaner that just can't be beat. I shoot once a week and hunt whenever the season permits and I allways use Hoppe's No. 9 on my weapons because I demand only the best!

This stuff has been around forever, and it's lasted because it works. It's my favorite solvent for cleaning shotguns and does well for most pistol cleaning too. It is adequate for cleaning "deer hunter" rifles that have fired only a few rounds but in truth there are much better solvents for copper fouled rifle barrels.The real benefit of Hoppe's is the aroma. The smell of #9 never fails to bring memories of my earliest childhood, when shotshells still had top wads and fired paper hulls were perhaps the only thing in the world that smelled better than Hoppe's. When dad and uncles would return from hunting forays into the wild unknown of marshes or woods I'd watch and listen with absorbed fascination while they cleaned their guns and told of their adventures. The nostalgic smell of #9 always takes me back. It truly is perfume for the gun room!
