Product Information

Lyman 1-Cavity Bullet Molds are made from solid leaded-steel and machined to an exact and smooth super fine finish. The molds are then heat treated (that is why they are blue in color) and feature hardened steel alignment pins to provide many years of bullet casting service. Sprue plates are made from solid steel, ground flat and held tightly in place with tempered steel spring washers and screws. In addition, break-in is often half the time required for iron molds. Mold handles are not included.

Very pleased with the ...

Very pleased with the quality of this mold, I have used many of Lyman's molds over the years and this is just as good as my others, very happy and would recommend this brand.The mold takes a while to warm up as with all steel molds but once she's hot, casting is quick and the bullets drop on the first or second whack every time. The bullet itself I am happy with and suitable for long range, I am using this in my .458 win mag (Ruger No.1 rifle) and it shoots decent enough so far, haven't even worked up the best load for this yet. Recoil is substantially more than the 405gn lead or 300gn jacketed bullets as expected.

Had very few bad bullets ...

Had very few bad bullets on start of casting.bullets poured out at .4595 with my alloy.(which is beween #2 and linotype).In my ruger # 1 I avg. 2.5 to 3 inch groups at 200 yds.I got my best groups with near max powder charges with every powder i tried in my ruger.The only thing i had trouble with was getting gas checks to stay on . I sized bullets down to .458. I had to have gas check groove polished out .002 more to fix the problem. great bullet for long range shooting

I bought this mold from ...

I bought this mold from an old, established company that I thought would make a good product. Boy was I ever wrong!!! When cast, the bullets came out at .456" and the gas check shank was .005" too small to allow the gas checks to grip. I even tried running them through a Lee .457" sizer to get extra grip on the shank...no good. After my 10th attempt to get a live person at the Lyman Customer Service number, I began to tell the representative about the problems and he said "Send that back to us right away." This lead me to believe there was a problem with the run of molds they knew about beforehand. So, off it goes to the factory with 2 cast examples of my own alloy, 2 examples cast of linotype, and 2 examples cast of 50/50 tin/lead. Well, after 3 weeks and repeated telephone messages, I got a replacement in the mail, and guess what, it was the same problem in a different package! Personally, I never intend to buy another Lyman mold. As a contrast, I had problems with an RCBS mold also casting undersize. Two phone calls later a new mold came in the mail with a return shipping pre-paid label and box to return it in. The difference in customer service was too obvious to ignore. Henceforth it will be any mold other than Lyman for yours truly.

This is a good bullet for ...

This is a good bullet for long range shooting. It is stable in windy conditions, the gas check eliminates any leading problems and the recoil is milder than the 500 or more grain projectiles.
