Birchwood Casey's Perma Blue has been the pro's choice for years in touching up nicks and scratches. Easy to use, just clean the metal surface and apply. Birchwood Casey recommends using the Cleaner-Degreaser (410-522) for cleaning the metal before application. The Perma Blue Kit includes everything you need to touchup or re-blue a complete firearm.

Technical Information

Kit Contains:

One 3 ounce bottle Perma Blue Liquid gun blue.

One 3 ounce bottle Blue and Rust Remover.

One 3 Ounce bottle Cleaner-Degreaser.

Two Rust Preventative cloths (5-1/2" x 8")

Two Rolls of 2/0 Steel Wool (3" Long x 1-1/2" Diameter)

One Piece of #400 Wet or Dry Blue Remover Cloth (2-3/4" x 9")

One Piece of Non-woven cloth (8" x 16")

Two Polyester Blueing applicators

One Sponge (2" x 3" x 1")
Notes:

Kit is used to touch up scratches and worn spots, or to completely re-blue most guns.

Perma Blue will give a non-streaky, even blue/black finish to steel (except stainless).

All parts to be blued must be free of any rust and oil.

Apply without heat with a swab (Q-Tip).

Two applications are normally needed.

I assume those that rated this product poorly did not fully follow the directions and good advice given in the direction pamphlet. I am extremely pleased with my results on my Mosin Nagant M44 barrel. I took my time, followed the directions and got an awesome result. Take your time, apply multiple coats, and cure it overnight with a coat of Kroil...I couldn't be happier.

I will be charitable and give this stuff a 3.In practiced hands, it is capable of producing fair to good results. You just need to know how to work with it.1) Don't think you are going to blue your gun in an hour. Assume a 4-hour job to re-blue a rifle or shotgun.2) This stuff is as thin as water and runs accordingly.Put it on slow, put it on even. Have lots of 00 steel wool on hand to blend in the streaks. 3) After about 5 coats it begins to look better than what you just took off. However, put on at least 10 coats.4) Let it cure.5) It produces a FAIR to GOOD bluing for $3.99

Like finishing fine ...

Like finishing fine furniture, the surface prep is the most important step. If you want good results you have to put forth the effort. That said, I achieved a beautiful, gleaming deep blue/black finish. A blued gun will rust if not stored properly. Wipe it down with an oily cloth before storage to prevent rust. The rust and blue remover has a strong odor. I had to use it on the front porch to keep the peace with my wife.

If this product does not work you probably did not follow the directions. The gun has to be taken down to the bare metal. If you do the prep work correctly this product works great. I refinished a pistol last winter and it still looks wonderful.

great product tried it on ...

great product tried it on old single shot 12 gauge barrel. the greaser and rust removers are both excellent. i was happy with finished product. but realized that i hurried a little too much on prep. before blueing. i didnt polish the barrel good enough and it didnt look professional. so i redone it 2 weeks later not knowing that you are not suppose to store the supplied cotton swap applicators inside the bottles. the swab in the blue bottle dissolved completely and turned the blue into a milky white substance. it was completely ruined. DO NOT STORE APPLICATORS IN THE BOTTLES. so i went to the local huntin store and bought another bottle of just the blue. and took my time and really made the barrel shine. then applied 3 coats of the blue. and it looks amazing. very happy with this stuff. and for the price you cannot beat it. and i cant give it a bad review for my own trial and error mistakes. just wish there would have been a warning on the label about leaving the applicators in the bottles. still great product.

I recently re-blued a ...

I recently re-blued a Remington 1100 with Perma blue. I used extremely hot water and dawn dish detergent while wet sanding the parts. There are a few things to remember while in the process of prepping the gun. 1. degreasing is of utmost importance. I would even use purple power or lacquer thinner to make sure all oils are removed. 2. spend that extra time to make sure you sand all blemishes out of the metal. Start with an 80 grit if needed and step down to a 120, 220, 320 etc and finish up with 400. Be patient this will take some time as you will need to sand out the scratches left from each precious grit of sandpaper. I prefer 3M sandpaper for this job. 3. Put as many coats of bluing as you need to get desired finish. I put about 10 coats. This stuff isnt a miracle fix and it will take some hard work on your part but if you follow the directions meticulously you will end up with a finish not far from factory. I can't barely tell the difference from my bluing job and the bluing job on brand new guns.

I tried this on a test ...

I tried this on a test piece, which was the hammer of my 1911, it worked as expected. I had a nice blued finished after 2 coats, however the cotton swabs provided with the kit fit perfectly in the bottles. The instructions and the label on the bottles do not indicate that they should be stored separately, and after 24hours all three bottles of solution are ruined.

Product works great and ...

Product works great and is easy to use. Follow directions and don't rush, make sure all old bluing is off and the metal is gleaming before you apply cold blue. I refinished my 1992 Traditions Buckskinner Carbine Muzzleloader, I have hunted with it for 18 years and it looks brand new again. Thanks.

I would guess that the unfavorable reviewers didn't follow directions. Tried this on a worn 1911 clone, and it worked great. Remember the part in the instructions that says if the blue isn't dark enough, repeat steps 1-3. It took quite a few coats to get it right, but with a little patience, it'll work right. If it doesn't turn out right, look back at your steps, and assume you did something wrong, as it's a lot easier to do wrong than right. Great product with good instructions, Thanks Midway!

Good product. I followed ...

Good product. I followed the directions and I like the result. Though there was a section where it seems to have not worked but it turned out I didn't fully dry that section before applying the bluing paste. Overall I'm pretty impressed with the kit. Though I do think that the blue should penetrate regardless of how wet or not the item would be, I have to say, if you take your time and follow instructions than you'll get a nice result. Recommended.
