In my Handi-rifle the Federal factory ammo using the 275 gr XPB is scary accurate at 100 yards. Also, the bullet's effectiveness on deer is excellent. I once had just a second or two to get off a shot and hit a deer low in the belly. Despite the poor shot placement (which regrettably does happen in the real world of deer hunting) the deer only travelled about 10 yards before dropping. I was amazed at this. One other benefit of the factory load is that recoil is quite manageable. I am going to start reloading for this round to try to duplicate the factory velocity & accuracy. I don't think I'll have any problems getting good hunting accuracy from this bullet. I already know that the terminal effects on deer will be awesome.

Performed excellent loaded over H110 on whitetails. Flat took it of its feet from 100 yds. Will definitely keep using..

Excellent bullet, shooting it in a Alexander Arms .50 Beowolf entry carbine upper. With WW296 at 2.110" OAL in my rifle, I am getting 2275 fps. Caution, if you reload .50 Beowolf, overall length is critical!!!This should be ultimate deer brush load.

I have been handloading this bullet in the new S&W 500 magnum revolver and have achieved some great success after initial failures. I had to give pistol primers away, because they are simply not hot enough to ignite the charges. After trying 5 powders and changing to Federal 210 Large Rifle primers, a load of 40 grains of H110, propels the Barnes 275 grain Hex bullet to 1870 fps which is 200 fps faster than the factory ammo and beats the socks off anything else for accuracy with 5 shot groups of 1.7 inches at 30 measured yards. If anyone has a better load than that, I would love to know. Enjoy.

Great bullet shoots consistent 3 inch groups at 100 yards over 43.5 grains of lil'gun. Although they are a little pricey to shoot other than sighting in and load development.

Great bullet, using Hogdon's loading data, I have been shooting three shot groups under 1" at 25 yards with iron sites. I thought I had jerked the trigger on the second two shots, because I didn't see new holes, what a surprise to find I had nearly keyholed the three shots. Great bullet to shot with the 500, as it's light enough to not have the monsterous recoil of the cast performance 400 and 440s.

I started loading this bullet for my new S&W 500 Magnum with an 8 1/2" barrel in hopes of creating a good hunting bullet for our local whitetails. I needed somthing that would produce enough shock (over 1600fps)that would make the whitetail stay put while it bleed out. (not a good tracker)After much effort trying different combinations I arrived at my best 'middle of the road' loads. H110 with a Magnum Rifle primer in a Starline Case produced an average V of 1722 fps. H110 with a Standard Pistol primer in a Starline Case produced an average V of 1785 fps.While the velocity is about the same, the latter produced a 5 shot group at 60 yards (average shooting distance for me)of just under 6" while the other was right at 8". I know, I know, those aren't groups to brag about but I'm an old geezer of 68 with a stignatism.A little more powder and Mag Rifle primers produced a good bit more velocity... it also produced more hurt.This data was collected using a CED Millennium Chronograph from Competitive Edge Dynamics.Hope this will be of use to someone.Happy shooting and join the NRA if not already a member.

I am working up a load ...

I am working up a load for these as I "roll my own." However, I did have some factory loads with the same bullet. Just to see the mushrooming effect, I lined up six one gallon plastic water jugs filled with water (6" x 6" square, each jug) and shot into the center of them. The bullet literally blew open the first three jugs and made a hole in the fourth jug and just started exiting the fourth jug on the back side. That is 24" of water that the bullet went through. The mushroomed bullet I have here on my desk looks identical to the Barnes XPB advertisements. The bullet is a six-petal mushroom and weighs exactly 275 grains (there was absolutely no copper or fragmentation found in the water jug bottoms - the bullet retained 100% of its original weight). I am hoping that an accurate load will be worked up with this bullet for deer and black bear hunting with my S&W 500 Mag. 4" barrel.

Very accurate-fast bullet, for the 500. Consistent groups. The best deer round of all the 500's.all 5 deer taken were devistatedly taken off there feet upon impact, massive wound cavity and exxxit holes from max.loads. Good 100 yd. med.game Tyson load, so to speak.
