Much better than cotton! ...

Much better than cotton! Despite being a synthetic, these Sontara patches absorb very well. The non-woven material was specifically designed by DuPont for cleaning applications. These patches will not unravel because they aren't woven, and they don't produce lint or stray threads. I've used them for solvent cleaning using many different types of solvents and they are safe for even the most aggressive gun solvent or bore cleaner. I prefer to use them with a mildly abrasive bore cleaner and pull them 10-20 times through the bore when wrapped over a brush. Cotton patches don't tolerate this abuse. I use this size for 9mm, .40 S&W and 10mm. I also cut these in half and use the rectangular patches to wrap around a long .22 rifle brush, instead of the smaller square .22 sized patches which work better for the typical patch pullers. I use the 12 gauge shotgun sized patches for the 12 gauge, but also as small cloths for general cleaning and wiping. If Hoppes stopped making these patches, I'd find a source of Sontara and cut my own. They're that much better than other patches.

I decided to try these ...

I decided to try these because they were less than half the price of the cotton patches. While they work OK, compared to cotton patches they are pretty much garbage. They don't hold the solvent, it ends up dripping and running everywhere. Plus I'm not convinced they do as good a job grabbing the junk out of your barrel. While using a Tipton Brand 40 caliber cleaning jag with these I used THREE of the synthetic patches at a time in my 40 caliber GLOCK barrel in order to get a tight fit. I only have to use a SINGLE standard cotton patch and the fit is SUPER TIGHT, just about but not quite too tight with the cotton patch, assuring that the cotton patch grabs everything on the way by. So, these things cost half as much, but you use at least three times as many and they still don't do nearly as good a job as good old cotton. I really wanted to like these synthetic patches, but I can't argue with real life results. I would not recommend these.

I haven't bought patches ...

I haven't bought patches in quite a few years, and had previously always used Hoppe's, but they were cotton back them. I do not like these as well as the older cotton ones. Their old cotton ones seemed to do a better job cleaning chambers and bores and held solvent and dirt better. I end up using two of these for every one of the older cotton ones. Will not buy again.

If you've been looking in vain for a .224 patch to use on a .22 cal. Montana extreme style jag, look no further. These fit nice and tight, without flexing the cleaning rod. I just wish I'd found them before I bought all those other patches.

I figured a patch is a patch, right? Nope. These are very thin and don't fit tight in the barrel, useless for that role. Not bad for wiping down frames and such, but I much prefer cotton. Lesson learned.

I use only synthetic patches to clean my precision-tolerance firearms. I always get good results. I will not use cotton because it is entirely unacceptable to have any lint left in the barrel.Re the negative viewpoints: (1) Synthetics don't soak up as much solvent, so much less is required to do a good job. Cotton wastes a lot of solvent. If you are used to using cotton, you need to adjust your thinking about how much solvent is necessary.(2) Since the synthetic patches are thinner, you need to use jags that are sized accordingly. I get excellent results in my 357sig and 40S&W barrels using Outers jags that are sized for synthetic patches.(3)I'm an engineer with years of experiance in high-rel, high-tech manufacturing. My professional opinion is that this is a good product if used properly.

Waste of Money...you'll ...

Waste of Money...you'll end up using 2-3 times as many patches. Clue..it's synthetic! Cotton it is NOT. Waxed paper also absorbs..these will also absorb but will not hold onto your chemicals..stick with cotton. These patches are also 1/4 inch smaller..makes a big difference! If you wrap this patch around a wire brush, you'll have a heck of a time getting it off because it shreads into fine hair threads. No substitute for cotton...apples and oranges.

These don't stretch like ...

These don't stretch like the cotton ones resulting in more consistency. With cotton, you have to wrap it the same way with the same tightness every time and it bunches up in front making fit impossible using my parker-hale jags. These synthetic ones, allow me to clean my barrels instead of wrapping jags over and over, undoing patches that bunched up on the front. Less lint and pieces to fall off and stay in the barrel.

After using these I will never use the cotton/woven patches again. The cotton patches always unravel in the bore, leaving a string behind! These can't do that. When cleaning a gun that needs lots of solvent or oil (large caliber rifle), try using two patches. They work great.
