Product Information

A high quality silicon carbide abrasive paste that is used for lapping the bore of a firearm, the bolt face, bolt lugs and a hundred other uses where a perfect final fit or a lapped smooth surface is needed. When lapping a bore, pressure will likely increase with grit impregnated bullets. Due to the likely increase of pressure, light loads are recommended. Five shot strings up to a maximum of twenty shots of each grit are recommended. Repeating the process using progressively finer grits will produce a significantly smoother bore.

I purchased the lapping kit kind of skeptic I could clean up the bore on my M1 Garand. It was on sale for $22.99, so I said what the hell and I gave it a try. I must say I'm very happy with the results. When I first got the rifle the bore was dull and tooling marks were visible. Now the bore shines as if its been chromed, well almost. I could still see some tooling marks but not as prominent as they used to be. The reason I got the Wheeler lapping kit was so I could lap my other rifles too and next up is my Mosin Nagant. One thing about the kit that I didn't like is that the directions are very vague and do not guide you by showing or stating how to go through the steps. It pretty much says here are the tools to lap your bore and were not responsible for anything that might happen even though nothing has happened. They could have taken a little more time to go through the steps in a bit more detail. I would suggest purchasing the kit without the steel plates in order to save $10. You could use any scrap steel plate you have, or can get you hands on. I just don't believe that 2 small plates of steel are worth $10, but that's me. Its not rocket science by any means, but you do have to know a little about reloading.

Product works fine & my only objection is that the jars should have the grit courseness labels on them and not on the jar lids. Too easy to put the wrong lid on the incorrect jar of grit if you have more than one jar open at a time.

I did my homework on the ...

I did my homework on the web before I purchased, and I had lots of information about how others had used this product, so I didn't really need instructions. Lapped an Excel .22 magnum, (pulled the 40 gr bullets, dumped most of the powder, and used an 80 grain .224 bullet that I embedded in the compound.) I don't recommend you do this on your own. You could ruin your gun if you don't do it right . Also a Rossi 92 in .357 mag. Took the .22 mag from 4 inch groups to under one inch. (I had tried 8 kinds of ammo, and couldn't get under 4 inch groups.) I didn't think it would make much difference on the Rossi, but groups went from about 2 inches at 25 yards to a cloverleaf hole. My Ruger M77 .223 and .30-06 already shoot under an inch at 100 yards, so I don't know if I want to mess with them, but I think I will try this on my Mini 14 too. I am very pleased. To those who want better instructions..... Legal liability limits how much information can be given out on many products. If you use google as a tool, you can find a lot of useful information on how to use this lapping compound. I have also used it with my Dremel and a felt wheel to buff internal parts to make actions smoother. I am glad I bought it.

My only complaint is the ...

My only complaint is the lack of instructions. I was going to do a fire lapping, but the abrasives are in an oil compound so I put the abrasive on patches. I started with the 220 on a patch wrapped around a nylon bore brush. I did 8 strokes in both directions. Cleaned all of it out then went to the next finer grade and did 12 strokes in both directions, cleaned it out and did 18 strokes in each direction with the finest grade. I finished with another brand of bore polish. The rifle before would begin to shoot larger groups after 10 or 15 shots and took 8 or ten patches with Montana Extreme or Barnes CR10 before they stopped coming out blue. After the lapping I shot the rifle and it mantained its accuracy for 30 or 40 rounds and was very easy to clean, showing mostly powder fouling with very little blue on the patches.

Just ordered 2 box's and delivered with no instructions...I highly recommend buying the book (How to accurize a factory rifle) can get it threw Midway this book tells it all and had better instruction on fire lapping a barrell using these type of lapping compound. I only rate this 3 stars due to No instruction....Also relized when fire lapping a barrell, As i read in the book Only jacketed bullets should be used...I'm no gunsmith I didn't know but thanks to my handy dandy book mentioned above now i Know..

Used the abrasive kit in conjunction with Hornady Great Plains bullets to fire lap s Spanish made 50 cal muzzleloader. Fifteen shots with 320 grit, followed by 10 shots with 600 grit. Excellent results- smaller group size, and much easier to clean. Only negative is lack of useful instructions. Lawyers influence, no doubt.

I needed to lap the slide ...

This product is great for the beginning gun builder. I'm currently building a 1911 and so far I have used this in getting a proper and smooth fit with the slide to frame and mainspring plug to slide fitting. Filing can only get you so far before you get angry. Lapping compound is excellent for that last hump for a good fit and feel that is required of a good firearm.
