Product Information

This DPMS AR-15 A3 Bull Barrel Upper Receiver Assembly comes fully assembled and ready to install on any standard small pin, mil-spec lower receiver. The versatile A3 Upper configuration is constructed of Forged 7075 T6 Aircraft Grade Aluminum, and features a Picatinny Top Rail for ease of mounting optics. The 20" Stainless Steel Bull Barrel sports a well-executed target crown for superior accuracy, while its additional length and heavier contour moves extra weight to the front end of the rifle for faster shot-to-shot recovery, decreased perceived recoil and less muzzle flip.

This upper is chambered for 223 Remington, and uses 1 in 9" Twist Rifling that is ideal for use with light- to medium-weight projectiles of up to about 69 grains. A Rifle Length Free Floating Aluminum Handguard rounds out the package and further aids to enhance accuracy potential by removing all shooter-induced pressure from the barrel. Comes complete with a single rail gas block, commercial bolt carrier assembly, charging handle, forward assist, ejection port door and shell deflector.

Great shooting upper! I was able to shoot a ridiculous one ragged hole 5-shot group at 100 yds with this upper after running Tubbs final finish through it and using 69 gr. Sierra MK's with 24.5 gr of Varget. Could not be happier with the upper. Several hundred rounds and not a hiccup, and it also consistantly groups under 2" at 300 yards... What more could you ask for.

I'm almost at a loss for words. I've read all of the great reviews on this upper and I guess I got the lemon. It groups very good. Really likes 50gr Barnes varmint Grenades with both Win 748 and H-322. It shot these .5 MOA from the start. Here is the problem..These were shot single shot. It fails to cycle the bolt back enough to pick up and feed the next round. Its a gas problem. You could see leakage around the gas block. When I loosened up the 2 set screws, it was pretty obvious. It was very loose. You could easily just pull the gas block and tube from the barrel. I've never encountered anything with this much difference in the fit. I'm going to pull it back apart and measure it all with a micrometer. 200 rounds were shot, all single shot except 2 in a row then later was able to get 3 shots off without problems. I know this will get fixed, it's just frustrating to have this happen.

I purchased this upper from Midway last year, I love it. It shoots sub moa at 100 no problem I've shot 200 yards and had a tight group with in a inch. I am currently sighted in for 300 and can get them in a 3" group at 300. I believe it would shoot a better group with a higher power scope I have trouble seeing the center of the bulls eye through my 3-9X44 so I'm sure I'm not aiming at the exact same spot every time as I am at 100 and 200 yards. I've been shooting Tullammo and federal bulk ammo. I had trouble grouping the federal at 100 but so did my buddy's Colt with a 16" barrel so I guess it was the ammo. It is a heavy gun, if I was in the market for another Bull barrel upper I would defiantly buy another, as I would recommend it to others also. My next upper purchase will be a DPMS upper with a lighter barrel for something light I can throw around easily and shoot better free hand.

Just trying to break into accuracy shooting for cheap as a first timer. I shoot 5 shot groups under an inch with pmc bronze and never get flyers. I want to start hand loading rounds for it and see what this baby really can do. Me and any one I shoot with are very inpressed.

Very happy with the upper. Very nose heavy but I have mine sitting on a bipod so I didn't care. Color matched very well with my double star lower. First 5 shots after sighting in the scope gave me 1/2in group at 100yrd with test formula using blemished 55grain polymer tip I got here at midway. With a little more twiking of the formula, I'm pretty sure I can get less than 1/2in at 100yrds. Only have 70rds through it so far, very accurate right out of the box and no jams whatsoever.

Very happy overall. I originally had a standard carbine and was primarily using my AR for Coyote hunting here in IL. The majority of shots are <200 but I have really been happy with this upper overall. I like building my AR's piece by piece but this upper featured everything I wanted and I have seen my accuracy greatly improve with this upper than my previous carbine setup. Yes its heavy but the 20" barrel provides great accuracy with less weight than a 22" or 24" barrel. Probably one of the best investments I've made for my AR and I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a great hunting build in the .223 caliber. I did replace the standard free float tube for a hogue rubber overmolded tube simply because in sub zero temperatures it provides a more comfortable grip and does not get near as cold as the standard aluminum tube. The weight of the bull barrel really adds some stability when perched on my shooting sticks as well.

Good results, bought this upper 3 years ago shot around 1000 + rounds of 55gr through it so far. It worked perfect. The dogtown soft nose bullets are holding about 5/8 inch at 100 yds. I would recomend this upper.

Bought this February of 2011 to complete my first bench shooter. Broke in with 100 rounds of factory ammo. Not one jam. Since then I have used ONLY Hornady 60gr VMax with 4895 powder, or 68gr Hornady HPBTwith 4895...not one issue with feeding, the gas block leaking or headspace. Both loads are drilling dime size holes all day long. It will also sub-moa 55gr fmj and Speer's 70gr varmint SP's. Love this drop in upper and would recommend it to anyone.

Mine is the 24", but it's no longer up on line. My biggest complaint is that the throat on these is soooooo long. I can shoot one ragged hole when loaded .010 off the lands with Hornady 68gn BTHP Match rounds, and when loaded to magazine length, I'm lucky to get 1" groups. Most people would accept that, but when there is that much difference, there needs to be something changed. I understand they have to have the barrel fit to allow all factory rounds, but the throat is way too long for it. I like it, but it's not superb like it should be. I also have an abnormal amount of gas leaking from the gas block and a large amount of carbon build up on it. I can't tighten it any tighter, but it still leaks out pretty good. I'm not worried, it still cycles with no troubles, but cleaning all the time is annoying. Another flaw is the free float handguard. when tightened down all the way, it's almost 45 degrees off center. Kind of hard to mount a bipod and keep it steady when it's constantly moving. I had to fill the void with superglue to hold it steady... There are definitely some quirks that DPMS needs to work out with this product, but overall, it's more accurate than most with factory rounds, and it's super accurate with the proper hand load, but when you can't load it into the mag, it's frustrating.

Just finished building an AR with this DPMS upper assembly. I put a Harris bipod on it and noticed the bipod was not in line with the rifle. Turns out that when the free float tube is tightened the swivel stud was not mounted even closed to center. I Will update my review if DPMS fixes this problem. Otherwise very nice product

Very particular about what it's fed, and far too many misfeeds to give anything above a fair rating. Routinely fails to fully chamber rounds that all my other AR's feed quite reliably. Upper even fails to remain open after the last round from time to time with highest quality mags. The reason it achieved a fair vs. poor rating is due to very good (MOA or less) grouping. In my experience you must use a small base die if you intend to have this function in a manner that is less than frustrating (and then still expect about 1 in 10 misfeeds). Finally, it's very sensitive to seating depths in terms of how it groups. Overall, very disappointed with this product, even after putting much time, $, and TLC trying to get it to function properly.

Outstanding product. Mated the upper with a DPMS lower receiver, Daniel Defense lower parts kit, JP Enterprises single-stage trigger and A2 buttstock. Using an 8.5-25x40mm Mueller scope and the combination achieved 0.5MOA (verified at 100yd and 200yd) using 24gr IMR 8208XBR and 55gr SP bullets (pick your manufacturer). My next challenge is to get it set up for 600yd using heavier bullets.
