While this handy little device seems to do everything, it is a compromise to make them all work.

It picks up the local radio stations well enough but stations I can pickup well with the old (39" antenna) boombox, will not come in at all with this radio. Oddly IF I hold this radio by the handle, FM stations come in better (has no effect on other frequencies/ functions).

The flashlight is not very powerful, but in a blackout it would be good enough to see 15' without tripping over things. Beam is sort of a flood pattern, so it is best for use up close or there is too much light falloff.

The NOAA radio was tough to test since we only have 2 stations that come in fairly well on my scanner, but I could only receive one of them with about the same clarity, but it is extremely directional. (meaning I had to point the antenna precisely or it would not come in).

The GMRS functioned well, but I have not had a chance to test the range with my Talkabouts or my other radios to any extent. Longest range tested was about 1/4 mile so far and it worked well.

Tested this radio with alkaline batteries. I did not test out the rechargeable battery it comes with or the hand crank charging system. I am saving them for a "rainy day" since the NiCad comes in a "storage state" (discharged) and is best kept that way until ready to put to use.

Overall a decent little piece of emergency gear, but I believe the limiting factor is the antenna. Hard to make one antenna do so many tasks at extreme ends of the radio spectrum.

IF you are planning on using this for communications in actual emergencies, I would recommend getting a task specific transceiver in addition to this device.

Lightweight, compact ...

Lightweight, compact unit. Charged very fast with crank handle. FM radio picks up more stations than our home stereo. Light is handy when used with the shoulder strap when walking in the dark. Picks up noaa transmission crystal clear. Good little unit too have the way the world is going.
