Product Information

Lyman 1-Cavity Bullet Molds are made from solid leaded-steel and machined to an exact and smooth super fine finish. The molds are then heat treated (that is why they are blue in color) and feature hardened steel alignment pins to provide many years of bullet casting service. Sprue plates are made from solid steel, ground flat and held tightly in place with tempered steel spring washers and screws. In addition, break-in is often half the time required for iron molds. Mold handles are sold separately.

First off, this mold ...

First off, this mold takes a good bit longer to preheat than aluminum molds, but will last longer than aluminum. It's a very well made mold that casts an impressive looking hollow point bullet. Mine were dropping out of the mold at 128 grains. I dislike the preheat time, but not enough to keep me from recommending this mold. The high quality of the mold and the bullets that drop from it are more than high enough to make this one a great purchase. The Devastator hollow cavities remind me of Winchester Silvertip bullet cavities, except that the Devastator bullet noses aren't easily damaged in handling like Silvertips. This is a great mold, and a great alternative to custom molds costing 2 or more times as much.

This mold must be run VERY hot to get good hollow points. If it takes less than about 4 seconds for the sprue to cool on the sprue plate, it's too cold and you will get a "harelip" on your hollow point mouth. You will have a very high rejection rate if this mold is less than blazing hot! Frequent reheating is a must.Also, you must use a lot of tin with this mold, because it is very unforgiving of alloys with too much antimony.This is not a mold for beginners, and probably one of the most finicky molds I have ever used, but once you figure it out, it works well.Also, if you have access to a lathe, you can make round nose and truncated cone bullets by making your own pins. 3 stars for ease of use, 5 stars for versatility.

I just started casting bullets for center fire handguns. I have been casting them for years for my 50 caliber muzzle loader. I have found this mold is well made and the bullets come out beautifully at an average of 130 grains. At first I had some problems with the bullet tumbling into the target. I contacted Joe at Lyman and found out I wasnt using enough powder. When I increased the powder charge I found the bullets settled down beautifully and hit very hard. This bullet is awesome on water filled milk jugs. You have to see it to believe it. I highly recommend this mold and I highly recommend Lymans customer service, both are outstanding.

I recently acquired this mold and can say it cast a near perfect bullet except that after trying several alloys I could NOT get a weight under 132 grains. I am returning it to exchange for another as I believe this must be a fluke!

After receiving this mold 3 days ago, I finally had the chance to shoot my finished product. These bullets are very accurate and when cast with straight wheel weights and water quenched they are just about the right hardness and expansion/fragmentation is excellent. Outstanding tool for the bench. The only drawback is that unlike Lee's aluminum molds, this mold must be kept extremely hot to produce quality bullets. As it is only a single cavity mold, be prepared to move quickly so that it does not have the opportunity to cool. The extra diligence is well worth it when the milk jug jumps six feet into the air and practically explodes, though. And an FYI, Lee six cavity commercial mold handles work perfectly and save a few bucks.

Mold is very well made , and easy to use. After initial warm-up , I had some very good looking hollow-point bullets. I havent had the time to do some product testing out back, but the hollow cavity looks very impresive. They should work as well as some of the commercial made hollow points.

This mold does real good after you get the mold hot --Approx. 6-to-8 pours. After that if you keep going at a fast enough pace & dont pause or slow down it will produce the best looking bullets you have ever casted. They really shot well in my 92FS & did a lot more damage than the solid lead bullets I casted or bought. Now I don't have to buy any more costly defense ammo. Thanks Lyman.

Cast at .357 and 132 ...

Cast at .357 and 132 grains with my alloy (8lb WW 2 Pb and 2 ounces tin). Bullets fell from the mold without any tapping. One needs to keep the pin very hot in order for the tip to fill out nicely, but once that is hot, it makes for some great HP bullets. Loaded up and sized for my pistol, accuracy was very good, and expansion with my alloy was excellent.Cast fast with this mold, and you will have some great bullets.

First Let me say WOW!!. Excellent precise mold. I had the pot full of soft lead when I got this mold so just to test it I poured a couple of pure lead bullets- These came out to 128.4 grain bullets. I then drained the pot and put in a 75/25 lead to tin mixture and got some excellent bullets that were in the avg of 24.7 grain. After about 6 bullets to get mold hot I was then able to pour 100 bullets with only one bad one. I'm impressed.
