This stuff is excellent. It takes the standard 2.5" Judge and turns it into the defensive firearm it was meant to be. These Federal buckshots vs. "off the shelf" regular 2.5 buckshots: Fed = 4 pellets, Winchester Super X = 3 pellets. Fed = 1200 fps, Win = 1135. Fed at 10 ft. = 2" spread, Win = 6". Fed at 20 ft. = 4.5" spread, Win = 12". Fed at 30 ft. = 6.5 spread, Win = 22". Fed at 40 ft. = 9" spread. And for S&G's, Fed at 50 ft. = 13" spread. It's easy to see that the Federal "Judge" 000 buckshot is superior in every way to its competition. If you think you want to open your spread up a little, try mixing in some of the Winchesters. I wouldn't waste my money on the Personal Defense Federal #4 shot though. Not much of a difference over ordinary 4 shot. Pretty much useless over 10 ft. unless you're just looking to wound someone. If guns kill people, then pencils cause spelling mistakes...

I agree with the other review about the very close groupings at 7 yards I got constant groups of no more than 4". But my reason for giving it only a 3 star rating is I would have preferred the 000 shot to have a larger covered area, say more like a 12" area. I say this because The Judge is a home defense gun and a 4" group I might as well just shoot a 45 long. I must say they were great made shells, but for home defense I prefer the Winchester 000 buckshot loads. They may only have 3 (000) buckshot but at 7 yards they cover a good 12" area. A much better chance of hitting the target for a quick reaction shot, followed by a 45 Long. But its personnel preference.

I bought the Judge Magnum Stainless 3" chamber 3" barrel about 2 years ago and have tried at least 5 different kinds of ammo. Having shot about 500 rounds I have come to the conclusion that this is by far the very best of all rounds for what the gun was designed for. Although this gun can handle the 3" round which puts out a very large report, the 2 1/2 round is much more user friendly and also more accurate. I have tried the Golden Bear 2 3/4" full brassplated steel casings which is by far the worst....even though it throws out a great flame about 2 feet long from the barrel, every other round either sticks in the chamber or the casing actually cracks. The Federal Premium Defense ammo keeps a good tight pattern at up to the 15 yards that I use at the range and the recoil is very doable for shooters of all sizes and genders. Out of the 200+ rounds of this ammo that I have used so far, I have never had one stick in the chamber. I would highly recommend this to all new Judge owners to start, and then experiment from there for your self.

After talking to the Gander Mt sales people, they said my group would not even hit the target at 15 feet. I don't think they knew about this ammo. I decided to buy mine about two years ago. I was able to get 6 inch groups at 20 yards with mine. Never had the sticking problem. Shoot the 2.5 inch 000's. I had to prove it to my son and brother. I said wow!!! I thought pattern at 10 was awesome but when I saw a 6 inch group at 20. That sold me big time. I have not tried the Winchester yet but I think the vel is way slower if I remember right.

This is my personal defense carry round in my Poly Judge. Recoil is punishing, however, one does not shoot this round for pure fun. The 000 round groups at around 2-4 inches average at 7 yards, which is the "standard" distance for defense ammo trials. I would not hesitate to get some more of this ammo. I hope I never have to use this ammo for it's intended purpose, but if I do, I know it would perform with flying colors.

I use both a Judge and a Governor and have never had a problem with these shells jamming or otherwise causing a problem with my guns. The spread is excellent, with nice tight groups within 20'. Not only are they cheaper than using .45 LC, they are more devastating at the close ranges where a typical home defense or carjacking situation would occur.

For in home protection I give it a perfect score, however, on the street the pattern spread can quickly become too wide. Example: bad guy standing slightly behind good guy. One would hit both of them if he took that shot. I load my Public Defender with .45's for travel from my home. This is from a former PD Officer.

My gun is a S&W Governor. I had similar problems as those related above regarding cylinder jamming. It was caused by bulging of the case, which caused the case to back out and prevent rotation of the cylinder. I also experienced bulging of the primer. This is a serious problem for a home defense round. I also had a round that wouldn't fit in the cylinder. Diameter was too big. I agree that the pattern at 5, 10, and 15 yds is excellent.

I purchased the Judge a few weeks back and love it. Long Colt 45 cowboy loads are no problem. Federal Premium .410 2 1/2 " 000 Buck jams every second or third time. The Federal Premium shot was highly recommended for range and defense with the Judge. I purchased the gun for defense but cannot trust it until the jamming is resolved. I purchased a short box of three other .410 000 ammo to see how the gun performs to determine if its the round or the gun at fault.

This is THE best self ...

This is THE best self defense ammo available for the Judge. Much better than the PDX "3 disc" ammo, IMHO. This ammo fired consistently out of my Stainless 6.5 inch Judge. NO sticking problems. Perhaps that was only with the initial batches? I bought mine back in September of 2010. At five yards, the four buckshot stayed within a three inch circle. At ten yards, they stayed about six inches apart. It's a modern day blunderbuss! Velocity is about 900-950 ft/sec, far from 1200, but I've read that they penetrate about 13 inches in ballistic gelatin. That's beyond the FBI minimum. Twenty 000 buck fired off in 2-3 seconds? Sold American!

I purchased a Judge with a 3" barrel and 3" chamber & it was too large for my liking. I downsized to a Public Defender. Considering the function it was designed for I'm very pleased with it. The FEDERAL 000 Buckshot loads are excellent and my 1st choice for a short range home defense weapon. At 10 yards it patterned at about 3" and easily penetrated 3/4" plywood. 2nd choice for defense is Winchester PDX which had the same pattern as the Federal 000 buck. Both rounds had controllable recoil. All other defensive rounds by Remington, Winchester and Federal had too much spread for my liking. I give Federal 000 buck 5 stars followed by Winchester PDX both 5 stars for their intended purposes.
