First off, the scope is ...

First off, the scope is tremendous. I've used it out to many distances and can see fine details I otherwise couldn't. Don't need as much magnification when the picture is so sharp. The eye relief is way more generous than on cheaper spotters and adds to the ease of looking through it for extended periods. I wear eyeglasses and I'm not banging the eyepiece into my lenses all the time with the eyepiece cup folded back. I enjoy how it's rugged and compact enough to tuck into my range bag without having to lug a separate bag.Now for the kit. Mine came with a nice soft case for the scope, Alumina-type screw on cover for the objective, rubber cap for the eyepiece, neck strap, tripod adapter and tripod all tucked into a big aluminum case. I am led to believe that the standalone scope still comes with the very nice lens covers and soft case (and maybe the neck strap too), so the tripod and hard case are the only things you're getting additionally with this kit. Save the money. The big aluminum case is not quite airline quality but nice and sturdy. Too big to lug to the range but nice for storage. The tripod is typical of the Chinese kind of tripods you see everywhere these days but still serviceable. My problem was that at its lowest adjustments it's too tall on a bench and at its longest adjustments it starts to get flimsy. I've since bought a sturdier and lower tripod for it on the bench.

This scope like all ...

This scope like all Leupold products consistently provides an "exceptionally bright image with razor sharp details even in poor lighting conditions" I tried it out yesterday in a rainy and hazy day. I had concerns that I would not be able to see .22cal holes at 200yds because of the power but was delighted when I could easily see .223 holes at 200yds. The Leupold 15-30x 50mm has perfect optical clarity, great eye relief and superb exit pupil size even at 30x (top power). My only gripe concerns the focusing. I think Leupold could make some improvements on the focusing adjustment at the high power setting. The focusing knob is hard to turn and because it is takes very little movement to get the scope in focus makes it hard to focus. But, it might just be my 60 year old eyes.

Scope is Awesome. Kit ...

Scope is Awesome. Kit isn't worth it. Save the extra money and buy a tripod somewhere else. The tripod has fallen apart a few times and I havn't even taken it out of the house yet!! Scope is what you would expect from Leupold. Tripod is what you would expect from China. GARBAGE.

If you've been searching for the perfect backpack hunting- sized spotter, look no further than Leupold's 15-30X50. I've actually tested this unit side by side with other brands and can honestly say that this spotter consistantly provides an "exceptionally bright image with razor sharp details even in poor lighting conditions" when the other brands either optically fell flat on their face or failed completely.I'm not missing much at all by not having that extra 30X of zoom that the other brands offer. When cranked up much beyond 30 or 40 X, the more powerful brand's exit pupil size becomes so small and dim as to become virtually useless. The Leupold 15-30X50 has perfect optical clarity, great eye relief and supurb exit pupil size even at 30X (top power). It's a pure joy to look through and use.The Leupold ads always show this model upside down -it mounts to a tripod on a well designed but small adapter. Mounted rightside up and viewed from the side, I swear it looks just like the Starship Enterprise without the saucer shaped thing mounted above where the objective lens would be. Form follows function, I guess.I paid the extra $100 for the kit with mini tripod and hardcase. The case is well built, but larger than I expected. My only gripe concerns the out sourced tripod. WHY was it designed so that the quick release mounting plate remains on the scope each time it get disassembled? What happens if a quick change to a standard sized tripod is desired in the field? Too much fumbling and fiddling... and sooner or later that attachment plate will get lost when you need it most. I customized mine with an outside attachment knob and screw that allows the plate to remain attached to the mint tripod at all times -just like it should. Now I've got the perfect compact spotter.
