Product Information

This drop-in upper will attach to virtually any standard AR-15 lower assembly. Comes complete with charging handle, bolt and bolt carrier assembly, it is ready to pin to a complete lower assembly without modification. The A3 is a Flattop upper that gives the shooter versatility when it comes to mounting optics. This upper features a free float handguard that is vented for heat dispersion. The Winchester Super Short Magnums can be accommodated on a standard AR-15 Lower and include one 4-round magazine. The Gamestalker upper features a 1 in 10" twist 22" Stainless Steel barrel.

This is a nice and accurate upper, but it is picky about ammo for reliable feed and ejection. Both 100 and 95 grain Winchester factory ammo feeds fairly reliably, but still not as well as a good 5.56 upper. Reloading can be done successfully, but loads must be stout, or they won't eject and feed well. Lighter loads also exhibit a lot of black blow-by around the thick neck brass, which doesn't expand and seal in the chamber very well under lower pressure loads. Resizing spent brass may require modifications to the shell holder height to permit sufficient shoulder push-back. I had this problem with both Lee and Hornady full length sizing dies. It's hard to push the shoulders back on this cartridge. Get a Wilson case gage to check case headspace, for sure!

Great upper & much ...

Great upper & much lighter than their varmint version with the bull barrel, this thing is a pleasure to pack in the woods with a light lower! It's kinda picky but mine likes 75 grain V-max & 87 grain VLD between 3100 to 3300 fps & it loves the 58 vmax right at 3700. I was able to hit the 4000 mark but accuracy suffered & it was just too hot for a gas gun. As for reloads I own two oly uppers in 243 wssm & I had to shave a thou or two off the bottom of my die to re-size the cases enough to reliably chamber in both of them....Not sure if it's my dies or OLY just reams tight chambers but I won't complain as accuracy is excellent with the right loads! I've never used it on big game but it sure is a yote slayer!!

I have used this upper in the 243 wssm for over a year now and love it. I took it antelope hunting in Wyoming this fall (2011) and it performed flawlessly. Fit is good on my custom lower and accuracy is excellent with Winchester factory ammo. It was easy to make my own high cap magazine from std 223 mag with a magpul anti-tilt carrier with just a little work with a dremel. It is front end heavy but very accurate. And the 243 wssm is a rocket!

I would have given this ...

I would have given this upper four stars for quality and shooting capability. The one I received liked 85g Sierra HPBT bullets particularly well.My disappointment lies in the inability to use reloads. I tried full length resizing with a Lyman and RCBS die, just neck sizing with a Lyman neck sizer, and resizing with a Lyman body sizing die. Only a small percentage of reloads would chamber properly in the rifle. So reloaders beware. I have never experienced this problem with other calibers/rifles.

The quality of the parts ...

The quality of the parts used in this upper are excellent. The problem is the upper receiver they are installed in. I have tried this upper on several lowers, the fit is terrible. The fit is too loose, it wobbles back and forth on the lower about double of that of an early Colt military model. I have the Oly .223 WSSM upper installed on one of the lowers that I tried this one on. The .223 WSSM upper fits perfect on the lower. These uppers should be checked at the factory before selling.
