The RCBS Precision Mic is an indispensable tool for safe and accurate loads that help to extend the life of brass. The Precision Mic measures from the datum point on the case shoulder to the base of the cartridge giving the reloader the exact SAAMI tolerance readings. Just a few twists of the Precision Mic and the chambers headspace and bullet seating depth to 0.001" will be determined.

This is my second unit. The first is caliber .223, which I used to measure distance to lands in my Cooper Varmint Extreme. I rate it two stars instead of just one because it does work. It measures distance to lands.BUT, and this is a big BUT, you need the patience of Job and the manual dexterity of a heart surgeon to operate it correctly. It was easier to use in the Cooper with its Mauser claw extractor than in my Remington 700 in .308 with its push feed extractor. You MUST get the rim of the "free bore tool assembly" (looks like an adjustable plastic cartridge) to fit under the extractor. Failure to do so will result in the assembly getting stuck in the gun's chamber, necessitating pushing it out with a cleaning rod (says so right in the instructions). Although this happened quite a few times with the Cooper, on the Remington it was even worse. Slipping the assembly under the extractor was not a problem. But when I closed the bolt on the assembly, then pulled it open to extract the assembly, the assembly fell apart into its two separate pieces, the base extracting and the bullet stuck in the chamber. Thus, it was impossible to measure. Get out the cleaning rod for the bullet piece.What to do to keep the entire unit together while extracting? Simply tightening the hex screw in the assembly per the instructions didn't work. It still separated into two parts in the chamber. So after much trial and error, and more than a few under my breath dark oaths, I slipped the assembly under the extractor, then closed the bolt all the way WITHOUT locking it down. Just pushed the bolt closed all the way, then pulled it open to extract. VIOLA! The assembly popped out all in one piece, as intended, and measurement was possible. Bottom line: After two of these now, in different calibers, I would probably buy again; but BEWARE - be patient, be strong willed, and be agile. Good shooting, my friends!

This device works just OK ...

This device works just OK and I have used it in .223 and .243. I also bought the Hornady lock and load straight tool with the appropriate modifed caliber case and have found the hornady tool is much simpler and quicker to do the same thing as you use the exact bullet you plan to reload with the hornady tool. If you have a choice.....get the Hornady tool and it costs less to boot.

This tool is a must have in my reloading arsenal. I am able to properly set up my sizing die and guarantee that my cartridges are within my chamber specs. You are able to more accurately check case stretch and expansion of your brass. When trying other styles of bullets the OAL gauge is very helpful in determining the correct loaded cartridge length. It has greatly improved how my ammunition feeds and shoots. Consistency is a key factor when reloading and this is a great tool to insure that element. I use this to load for a Rock River Match Grade 308 semi-auto and the chamber specs are very tight.I got a great price at Midway and am happy with my purchase.

This works great!! Finds ...

This works great!! Finds your seating depth and you can measure you COAL to the bullets ogive and not the tip of the round since some bullets are longer than others. Since using this product, my groups have gone from 1 inch groups to .177 inch measured with a digital caliper center to center at 100 yards.

Most excellent for measuring headspace and OAL of a round. It has proven to be more consistent than either a nut-type comparator or calipers. I consider it money well spent. That being said, I have had little success measuring my chamber depth - could be operator error, but I just can't get consistent readings and prefer the Hornady OAL gauge. But it works so well at the other measurements that it still earns all 5 stars.

I just got my new MIC ...

I just got my new MIC today. I was very excited, but unfortunately I was very let down. I don't know if I got a dud or what, but my machined lines dont match up, so I can't tell if I am really at 0 or I am +/- .050 to begin with.I followed the directions to a "T" even the aid of the other reviews here, and I can't get a usable reading off of the body. If I close the bolt the entire way, I end up to the left of 0, in essence, negative, and if I chamber the round without closing the bolt completely, I get a positive number of .001, which is not a good reading. I shoot .344 moa out of my rifle at 100 yards with Federal Gold Medal Match ammo. Using a loaded round of Federal Gold Medal Match, I measure .028", with a +/-of .050" because of the mis alignment.I am returning this product.In no way does this product reflect on Midway USA, they are a great company, but this product is not good for anything.

An excellent tool! I use it quite often, especially when working up competition loads. Also great for headspacing, although not as useful with automatic rifles, since the pieces are friction mounted, and likely to slip.
