Product Information

These revolutionary bullets from Barnes are made of 100% copper and contain no lead. When the bullet expands, four razor-sharp cutting petals are created, allowing the bullet to penetrate farther through tough bone and tissue. These bullets usually retain 100% of their original weight, making them a superb choice for hunting. Barnes recommends initially seating bullets 0.050" off the lands. Best accuracy will be found from 0.030" to 0.070" depending on the rifle. This is not loaded ammunition.

I shot a 2200 lb. Cape ...

I shot a 2200 lb. Cape Buffalo with these bullets. They are accurate with very good interior ballistics. I will use them again. They also can work very much like solids, if necessary, since they monolithic.

These bullets are very consistent in my Merkel Double .470NE. In solid oak they open to a perfect mushroom with no petal loss. On a cape buff the first shot was one of these and it performed perfectly. Unfortunately, the skinners did not recover it from the mighty dead buff. By the way if your rifle is like mine and has the silly little folding leaf sights for various ranges, TAPE THEM DOWN OUT OF THE WAY and use the main fixed rear express sight only. At 2,150 feet per second, even a 500 grainer is on a buff at 0-150 yards, once regulated for that sight.

These bullets are ...

These bullets are reasonably easy to load. I crimp them in the first ring for the .470 Nitro. My own personal load is 110 gr RL 22 in Norma brass, but you must work up your own load safely. I shot a huge European Water Buffalo, scored 98, with these bullets and the banded solids. The animal was quartering away and my first shot struck slightly high as I tried to slip it in the rib cage. It struck the spine, and the bullet mushroomed, and then when it went through the spine, it stripped the copper petals off, and turned it into a very flat nosed square front solid that weighed 356 grains that was still effective at 71% weight retention. The second round entered the flank and traveled all the way through the breast bone, and was found under the skin in the front of the animal. It weighed 499.9 grains for 100% weight retention, and made a beautiful sharp edged mushroon that measures .940 inches across, and looks like the ones that Barnes advertises. I was unable to recover any other bullets from that carcas. I have been a solid follower of other bullet brands, but now I'm almost exclusively hunting with the banded x-bullets, and the banded solids. The accuracy of both of these is very good in my Chapuis, which doesn't like the factory loads offered thus far. You may need to alter the powder you use in order to have enough room in the case, but you can see that with 100 percent load density the .470 has enough room for this bullet fully seated.
