The key to casting quality lead bullets is consistency. With the Lyman Casting Thermometer reloaders are able to repeatedly operate lead pots at the ideal casting temperature. This stainless steel thermometer will measure a temperature range from 200 to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit and has a 6" stem for use with even the deepest furnaces. I bought the Lyman ...

I bought the Lyman because it was $12 cheaper than the RCBS.On first use, the needle indicator dragged on the dial face in the 500F to 700F useful range. By tapping continuously on the bottom of the pot, I made the needle hop to the true reading, or at least I think it was the true reading... The "clip" is small and very useless with nothing to illustrate how it attaches. Lyman responded to my e-mail warranty inquiry in less than 24 hours -- very fast. Their warranty is only 90 days and they say it will take up to 21 days for the replacement process. Such a long time to wait for a fix and such a short warranty. I would recommend sending the extra $12 to get the RCBS thermometer with a longer handle and longer warranty.The Lyman does have a very nicely printed cardboard box.

The Lyman thermometer works great. I really like the clip as it holds the thermometer firmly in place. The only I don't like is that it was made in China instead of the US.

This item was garbage ...

This item was garbage right out of the package - out of calibration from the start. Then, after one use, the dial is now stuck at 800 degrees; cold. From research, I understand that this item is OEM to Lyman, as is the similar RCBS offering. Midway did make it right, however, offering store credit.

Save your money and buy ...

Save your money and buy the RCBS model. Right out the package this thing was skipping and bouncing all over the place, reliable temperature readings are super hard to get. I have to constantly tap the face to get a reading, this thermometer does not go back to zero when cold, it seems to find cold temperature at 1000 degrees in counter-clockwise rotation-passing zero. On the Prod. Pot 4 I had a setting of 5 and this read it at 800 degrees, later that same day it was moved to 6 and the thermometer read 525. I'm not an expert caster and it shouldn't matter whether you are. I'm gonna keep this thing until I get time to send it back to Lyman for a replacement.

I purchased this product because it was cheaper than the RCBS. After 6 months of use the needle got stuck on 400 degrees. I sent it back to Lyman for replacement but have not recieved a replacement yet. I should have bought the RCBS their Customer Service is second to none.

Good: Looks nice, fast response, cute clip.Bad: Runs about 80 degrees lower than my thermocouple, so reading is suspect. Clip doesn't seem to work very well.
