Product Information

The Hornady Custom Grade New Dimension 2-Die Set is a great die set for the avid reloader. This die set includes a Custom Grade New Dimension (CGND) Full Length Sizer Die and a CGND Seating Die. The Full Length Sizer Die features a Zip Spindle, with a series of light threads cut on the spindle and spindle collet. This eliminates spindle slippage, and makes tightening the spindle lock a breeze when making adjustments. The floating bullet alignment sleeve and stem in the CGND Seating Die improve bullet seating and accuracy by pre-aligning the bullet and case before seating. The seating die also applies a roll crimp to secure the bullet in the case. The CGND die set comes packaged in a plastic storage box, and includes two Sure-Loc rings. Shellholder is sold separately.

I cannot stand these dies.. So I ordered some Lee dies instead (think collet crimp). Brand new dies, first run, once fired Federal Gold Medal Match .308 brass that has been tumbled in corncob, lubed up using Dillon reloading lube. Started to de-prime and size the brass, around 5 cases in, the press will not bottom out... Somehow it bent the de-capper... I have NO idea how this happened, but it did. I did my best to straighten it out and continued on my merry way... Another 7 cases in, this happened again.. Imagine my frustration with these occurrences happening in about that frequency the entire time. Oh well, FINALLY got all the cases sized, de-capped, re-primed. Started filling cases with powder, then moved on to seat the bullets..OH BOY! The bullet seater/crimp die wont actually crimp the case neck down on the bullet(175gr Sierra Match King). Heck, half the time, it was pulling the bullet back out of the case as it was stuck in seater.. My frustration have driven me to the end of my rope with these dies.. I have just ordered some Lee dies and had them sent to me 2 day air so I can finish my batch of reloads for my next shoot. I will not be using these dies ever again. I may even call Hornady and bring these gripes up with them.

Earlier this year, I wrote a very nagative review on this sizing die. Since then, I sent the die back to Hornady. They either repaired or replaced the die promptly. The die they sent back to me works perfetly.

I seldom take the bother to post a negative review. However in the interest of helping newbies to reloading, I also want to reiterate what many other reviewers have said - that the sizing die excessively works the brass, and I give the sizer zero stars. Fortunately I just reinforced my bench and I had to stand up to apply adequate leverage to get the brass through the sizer. Newbies beware of stuck brass if not enough lube is applied; read the other reviews as well. I knew that there was a problem immediately with the sizer, as I also have RCBS dies for my .308. I bought this set because I like the bullet seating alignment sleeve on my Hornady 45 and 223 dies, and thought that it would significantly reduce runout issues also for my long range gun. I gave this set 2 star rating due to the positive merits of the seating die, which is very good; and deducted 3 stars for the poor sizer. And I was also enticed by the free bullet offer. Sorry, but this set is going back to Midway. On a positive note my reloading room is full of big red Hornady equipment, including 2 presses and a case feeder on my auto progressive. I feel like Hornady blew it on these dies, and I'm planning on upgrading to Redding Comp dies.

I have been a fan of Hornady products but it seems their quality has been declining for a couple years now. When I needed a set of 308 dies I got sucked in by the offer of free bullets and tried my first (and last) set of Hornady dies. This set of dies is easily the worst I've ever encountered, even worse than Lee dies. After having to replace the zip spindle for the third time and destroying several pieces of brass in the process I returned them. The replacement Redding dies are outstanding as Redding dies typically are. I'd stay away Hornady dies, far away.

I give it one star only because zero is not available. The sizing die in this set is worthless. It does not work smoothly, cases seize frequently and it does not size properly. A high percentage of the cases I manhandled through this die have been ruined. The seating die in the set works fine as does all my other Hornady dies and equipment. Read the other reviews on this die, it appears Hornady has a real problem with it. I recommend do not buy.

Reading some of the reviews, I was hesitant to get these, but I have used some in other calibers before, and had great luck with them. I decided to get these in the 223 and 308, and both of them are awesome. I'm not sure how people can complain about these. I have reloaded over 100 rounds with each, and they come out as easy as they go in. I have never had a stuck piece of brass, never had them rip the head off. If you use Hornady products all throughout the setup, you will have no issues what so ever. I have found that in the past, using other brand name products that are a little cheaper, they will rip the heads off. But use the Hornady shell holder with these, and you can't go wrong. Lube them up with the Hornady One Shot lube, and you are good to go.Make sure you follow the directions on how to set the dies up. I think most people think they are just like every other die, and the set up is the same. They are much different (the seating die is anyway) so you need to read the directions and follow them. Do that, and these will work for you with no issues.

First, the seater die works very well and is highly recommended especially with the micrometer attachment. But, the sizing die has two big flaws. First it puts too much tension on the neck so bullet seating is more difficult than it should be. Second, the decapping assembly is far too weak. I have bent two assemblies in less than 200 rounds. Not acceptable and this die has been replaced by another brand.

I am still new to reloading, but have done .223 with Hornady press and dies. I thought I'd start .308 so I picked up some of these dies, I am starting to re-think Hornady now. I used IMI, PMC, Remington, and Winchester brass with Dillon case lube and they all stick going into the resizing die. I could only get one of fifteen or so cases to actually resize and knock out the used primer. The others all stuck. Each casing I got more aggressive with my lubing and it made no difference. The last case ended up getting so stuck that I destroyed my bench, it is a cheap one and the press was held to a 1.5'' of particle board. It is cheap but it has done plenty of .223. I'll keep my Hornady .223 gear and go to something beside Hornady for .308.

I should have know better then to trust anything that says hornady on it. Took them out set them up per instructions and what junk they are. Both seater dies keep coming apart and all I have done to this point is make dummies. Changed the little cheap wire that is supposed to prevent that on both dies I was given with no change. The resizing dies are just as bad. I only use new brass for my guns 3 loading and they go in the lease buck for the hunting property I share with others. Properly used and set up the 2 I have crucshed 3 shoulders to the point I wont even try to fire form them back to shape. They also left brass bodies pitted like the roads in a third world country. Like I said should have known better the to trust anything that says hornady on it. Dont waste your money these dies are junk!!!!!!!!

Bought these dies as I'd had good experience with Hornady dies for my pistol reloading (I have their dies in 45acp, 9mm and 380 auto). First case into the 308 Winchester die and it resized the neck of the case small enough that the decapping pin end of the "zip spindle" got stuck inside the case. It took some work with a pair of pliers and basically destroying the zip spindle to get it out. The decapping pin holder is incredibly huge compared to RCBS and that combined with the sizer die resizing the neck too small makes for a stuck spindle.

My 223 REM sizing die did ...

My 223 REM sizing die did what many others here describe, using proper Unique lube, case still got stuck. Now with this .308 sizing die, it crushed the shoulder of the brass and put holes around where the shoulder meets the neck. This was brand-new Winchester brass, and again, properly lubed with Unique. Picked up a set of Redding dies for .308, did everything the exact same as with the Hornady dies, and perfect function. There is no explaining what happened to my brass. I wish I could post a picture. Do yourself a favor: get Redding dies. Get Hornady bullets. Do not get Hornady dies.
