Product Information

Lyman 1-Cavity Bullet Molds are made from solid leaded-steel and machined to an exact and smooth super fine finish. The molds are then heat treated (that is why they are blue in color) and feature hardened steel alignment pins to provide many years of bullet casting service. Sprue plates are made from solid steel, ground flat and held tightly in place with tempered steel spring washers and screws. In addition, break-in is often half the time required for iron molds. Mold handles are not included.

This is a great mold!!! I have just started casting bullets for center fire pistols and this is one of my first molds. You have to smoke the mold with a couple of matches to prevent wrinkles in the bullet and you have to keep the mold hot. I have been using wheel weights as my source of lead and I am also trying different mixtures of lead with the wheel weights. My bullets come out at approximately 200 grains. This mold produces an accurate hollow point that expands explosively on the target. I have set up a water tube, using a large plastic water pipe with the ends capped with garbage bags. The bullet begins to fragment at approximately 6 inches and expands all the way to the bottom of the cavity with the bottom portion of the bullet reaching approximately 44 inches of water. I really want to see this bullet hit a wild hog!

Yep, got this one too. It also drops some really nice hollowpoints. It's a shame there aren't more hollow point molds on the market. This is one of my favorite .45 profiles. Buy it, you'll like it.

Fantastic mold! This is my 11th Lyman mold and all of them make good bullets. This particular mold easily makes perfect- absolutely perfect- bullets with an EXTREMELY large hollow point. Can you say visually impressive?!?! It takes the same top punch as the Lyman 225 grain round nose. These bullets are very accurate from M1911A1, with 5 of 7 bullets touching at 7 yards and two just out of that group. I was kind of nervous about buying this mold after reading the other reviews on this product, but took a chance based off previous good experiences with Lyman molds and now consider it a definate success. I like this bullet/mold so much that I would like to buy the 40 cal devastator mold in the near future.

This is a great mold. I did have trouble with the "hair lips" until I reread the other comments about temperature. When I increased the pot to 800 degrees from the usual 700, BINGO no more hair lips all I got were beautiful, weight identical bullets .Be sure to add your tin, 3 to5 percent and keep the mold hot. I like to leave a Quarter size sprue on top to help in this.

Excellent mold!!!! It makes PERFECT bullets with an awesome hollow-point. In the past I have had less than good results pouring H-P molds with my bottom draw pot so I poured this mold with my old Lyman egg style dipper maintaining contact with the sprue cutter while pouring. The instructions with the mold show how to correctly pour with the egg dipper. I dont know what alloy Lyman was using to get their advertised 180 gr. nominal bullet weight. An alloy similar to Lyman #2 weighs 201 gr. out of my mold and foundry type cast 171 gr. rosey tinted bullets. I suggest the casters using this mold weigh a few of their bullets prior to reaching for the reloading manual (a practice that should always be done anyway). My foundry type bullets were EXTREMELY hard and brittle and defeated the purpose of a hollow point bullet but their light weight reduced recoil to a minimum for plinking. Both alloys functioned flawlessly in my Ruger P97DC and group size was excellent. HATS OFF to Lyman for a wonderful mold!!!!

I purchased this mold thinking that casting a hollow point bullet would be a snap. Well this mold does not make the job too easy. Frist I think that the knob for the hollow point shaft assembly is too large, it barely fits into the space under my Lee 10 lb pot. Next unless you watch the position of the E clip used to retain the hollow point shaft the darn thing falls out. Then there is the amount of time it takes to get a first good bullet cast. I usually have to cast 20-30 bullets before the nose of the bullet begins to form properly and thats after preheating the whole mold as the lead pot is melting the lead. I do get usable bullets eventually but it takes some time and patience. If you want to cast bullets for your 45 ACP pick the round nose mold 384168 it make life much easier.

This is probably the best 45 ACP round that I have found during my years of shooting. It can be loaded down for targets or it can be loaded up for protection or hunting. Excellent product and one that every shooter needs in his inventory.
