These steel Checkering Files are 6" long and 1/2" wide. Double cut on both sides with safe edges. Perfect for checkering front straps, trigger guards or buttplates.

Pillar-type file is 6" long, 1/2" wide, 11/64" thick

Parallel width, slight taper to thickness

Overcut is parallel to file edges and upcut is 90 degree to overcut

Double cut top and bottom, both edges are safe (non-cutting)

I think the other reviewers have covered all the tips that I discovered. Yes--this file will checker deeply to pointed diamonds. I haven't found a reason to continue further with a 3-square file.

The file can and does cut ...

The file can and does cut the checkering to full depth. There is no need to use any other file to point diamonds. A few tips would be to make sure the edge you use, if using a straight edge to start off, has its last row of teeth parrallel to the file edge. Use the same side to maintain perfect spacing. When cutting up to a border as in vertical lines on a frontstrap, grind the tip of the file so you can use the forward most row of teeth and tip the rear of the file up to scrape the lines. Also grobet is currently the only manufacturer of checkering files.

Very good tool and well ...

Very good tool and well worth the money for the quality. I am not a gunsmith but with a little time you can get perfect 30 LPI. I did practice on scrap before I tossed the 1911 in a vise, glad I did. Like the other review says, use light cuts and keep going. No other file needed for my project, thanks Midway.

This file is used to layout LPI pattern on metal checkering jobs. Don't use this file to finish points for that you use a three square needle file. Be sure to keep it chalked so it doesn't get fouled. If you want to cut 30 LPI checkering this file is required.

This is a good tool. I ...

This is a good tool. I have checkered in the past with only a triangle file, this is 10 times faster and much more accurate. Be sure to make light cuts, or you may find it difficult to get the file started if you make too deep an opposing cut. It WILL make nice points without a triangular file. In winter with gloves, a sharply checkered bolt handle seems to almost work without effort.

I was very pleased with ...

I was very pleased with this file. The teeth were perfectly aligned with the edge and lined up straight. I used this file to checker the front strap of my 1911 and was very happy with the results. The points came up nicely and I didn't have to use another file to finish them. It also made nice horizontal serrations on the rear of my slide.
