I load up my Marlin 45-70 with these for deer, boar, or ram. Accuracy has been very good. I have taken 2 deer and a large ram with them. Each case resulted in a clean pass through (all lung shots) with very little expansion. That said I imagine a solid shoulder or other bone hit would be devastating.

I loaded this bullet for a NEF 45/70 handi rifle on top of some N133 at right around 2000fps. Accuracy was very good with 1" groups easily, zeroed at 50yds with no drop at 100yds. Used this combo for a 2012 north woods hunt here in MN, very light, short, quick gun with a fixed 4x scope. Walked upon the biggest buck I had ever seen as I came around the corner on a power line path, he locked on me facing directly at me at just over 100yds. I had just a few seconds to take a shot, I aimed at center mass in the lower neck. Bullet hit in the lower right side of the neck, traveled through the vitals, and ended up right next to his left hip socket, big bodied buck still managed to make it almost a
100 yards. Recovered the bullet that was a perfect mushroom with hardly any lead loss. I don't recommend a front shot due to lack of blood with only one hole, would not hesitate to do it again with such an awesome round. I now have the perfectly mushroomed bulled to go with the Very beautiful 10 point shoulder mount.

This is one of my favorite bullets for informal plinking.It destroys everything when pushed at 2,200+ fps which is faster than the bullet was designed for.It is also a devastating bullet on thin skinned game.When you get within 150 yards there is no equal for a gun that handles so well as a marlin lever action.My 3 shot groups average 2.0 inches at 100 yards with open sights.I reduce the velocity to around 1800 fps where it is designed to expand properly to avoid excess damage to meat when deer hunting.It is very effective,I am well pleased with the performance of this bullet.

Good price on a good bullet. Gave it only 4 stars because I haven't killed anything with it and am still working up a load but the quality seems to be there, like with all Hornady bullets. Weight spread is 2-3 grains and bullets are always in good shape when I receive them.

The terminal performance ...

The terminal performance on these bullets is nothing short of spectacular. I took a 7 point buck at 80 yards, this year with my Ruger No. 1 in 45-70 using this bullet, at about 1750 fps. The bullet entered 4 or 5 inches below the spine and about 6 inches behind the shoulder. It gave me a double lung pass through, hitting a rib going in. He kicked twice and the deer was dead. Massive wound channel and exit hole. There is no need to load these bullets to extreme velocities as they perform great at mid-velocities. Recoil is mild and my load of 3031 gave 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards. The 45-70 is a killing machine with this bullet. Give it a try.

Loaded these to about 2100 fps in my .45-70. Shot a doe quartering away from me at about 60 yds. Bullet entered a ways behind her left front shoulder, hit a rib, expanded, destroyed the heart and lungs, shattered the bones in her right front shoulder destroying all the meat, and what was left of the bullet came to rest just under the hide. The lead and jacket had completely separated. When I dressed her out there was also a massive bruise that extended from her right front shoulder, up her neck, all the way to her right ear. So... the moral of the story is to "slow'em down!" I've since loaded them to around 1600-1700 fps. They kill just as cleanly within 100 yds with much less meat damage. Plus... they are much more pleasant to shoot. Good bullet... devastating result!!

Loaded these for my Marlin 1895CB 45/70. Performance is amazing. I'm getting 1-1.5 in. groups at 100yds with a Leupold 2-7. Using H4198 I'm getting 2480fps. Load was devastating on deer this year. Much better than factory loads I was shooting last year. Love the accuracy, performance, and price. Hornady bullets always impress for the price.

As I am sure you will read elsewhere here - this bullet is a deer HAMMER!!! 3 deer this year, 45-70 Marlin Guide Gun - 2000 fps, 37 to 115 yrds ... None took a step. First two were broadside in the boiler room; the last one I did a penetration test and shot it through the shoulder, broadside presentation, as with the others, total pass through. I have been hunting deer with everything from 30-30s to .308s to 12 gauge slugs for years - there is NO comparison to how this load drops them. Accuracy is very good also. Doesn't get any better for woodland deer!!!

Used these this deer season in a new Marlin 1895G Guide gun in 45-70. Loaded with IMR 4198 to 2000 fps proved to be an outstanding load for deer. Took 6 deer ranging from 50 to 301 yards. All hit in the heart/lung area with no follow up shots required. Massive blood loss and devastating wound channels. none ran over 20-30 yards. Accuracy 1.5" at 100 yards. Will use these again next year! LONG LIVE THE 45-70!!

This bullet really improved my groups with the 32" barreled Buffalo Classic. Getting 1.5 MOA now. Couldn't get that with various cast bullets I used before.
