The Lyman #55 powder measure is packed full of features. The unique three slide adjustable cavity coupled with extra fine adjustments of width and depth provide consistent charges with almost any powder. The 200 grain metering capacity with an attached knocker assures a complete charge every time. The 2400 grain reservoir resists chemical action and protects your powder from harmful light rays. Mount on a bench, stand or press.

I've been using this measure for the past 2 years to charge my 30-06, 300 Wby Magnum, 220 Swift cases and 9mm, 357 mag and45 ACP pistol cases. I find no problems with it. THe Lyman is very reliable and throws very consistent drops even for pistol volume loads. The unique thing about this measure is you don't need to buy different micrometers to load pistol and rifle. Everything you need is included in the basic package including powder drop tubes and a built in mount (table edge is all you need to mount it). The metering system is also unique in the sense that it utilizes slides rather than adjustable piston cylinder. It's a bit strange at first . But once you get the hang of it, setting is a breeze.The Lyman is a good measure, complete and reliable. I'd buy one if I had to do it all over again.

Nice sturdy construction, ...

Nice sturdy construction, and a good price but that is about it I can say positively about this powder measure. Mine will rarely through consistent charges with any type of rifle powder. It will throw under or over the intended dialed in charge up to five 10th grains difference. In addition, the charge adjuster is very finicky to use and hard to see what setting you on. In addition, powder tends to stick in the measure so it has to be dissembled and cleaned before another powder is placed in the hopper. I would not recommend this measure to anyone.

I've been using this measure since the mid 80's (mine is orange and not the present color). Of the powder measures I've used (RCBS, Dillon and this one), the Lyman #55 is my preferred measure for reloading. Like has been stated by others, adjust your measure to have a narrow but deep crack in the rotary cylinder, especially for stick type powder to minimize grain cutting. I presently reload mostly pistol rounds and I have no problems getting accurate powder drops within .1 grains of each other with powders such as AA #2, AA #9, WW 231, Blue Dot, Unique and Bullseye. The biggest trick is to make sure the rotary cylinder measuring chamber gets filled the same each time you reload it by using the knocker to pack the charge in it after rotating the drum to the load position. And I now see that Lyman has added a powder baffle to this measure, which should help accuracy even more by keeping a constant level of powder above the measuring cylinder. That was my biggest complaint about my #55, but I also see that Lyman is selling the baffle separately on their site; might have to order one in the future. The only other complaint I have about this powder measure is the relatively small powder reservoir it comes with. You have to spend more money to get a larger reservior if you are doing higher volume reloading or are reloading calibers that have large case capacity.

I've used Lyman products almost exclusively for nearly two decades. However, I cannot recommend this powder measure. I had it set at three grains above minimum for a .38 special load and I had three squids. Afterwards, I started weighing every charge; charges that are .3 grains off are very common and some reached .5 grains. There's really no way of knowing when its set accurately, with variations at this level.

I have used the #55 since the '60s with little trouble for rifle loads, but as I now shoot more handgun loads I have experienced great inconsistancies. Yesterday I was loading 5.4 grains of 231 and checking each on the scale. The loads varied from 4.8 to 6.3. You'll get 4 or 5 good ones which will lead you to believe they will all be good. I had been checking every 5th load before, but now I check every one. I'm looking for a more accurate powder measure.

Before buying this Lyman 55 I read all the reviews and thought it would be faster than My 55 year old Belding Mull Powder Measure. Well I tried and tried to get it to throw the same load each time. I couldnt get it to do it. I took it apart and cleaned everything like the instructions said. Still not good for me. Too much variation. Back In the box and back to Midway. As far as the way its built and looked I wished it worked for me. Lyman sells good products and its sturdy and well Made and of course Midway is the place to buy Quality Stuff.

This product has the prospect of being a very good device if the funnel attachment to the powder throw was stable . present connection is one thumb screw. powder drop is very shakey. not worth the money. if I had saved the packing I would return it ASAP . previous reviews were not very helpful as is the factory information.

Honestly, I'm disappointed in my Lyman 55. It simply does not throw consistent charges. It will throw 3 or 4 perfect charges, and then the next few will be off by .2 or .3 grains. Not a big deal with rifle cartridges, but for certain handgun caliber/powder combinations, a variation of that much could easily be outside the load data range. I've cleaned it thoroughly several times (complete disassembly) but nothing seems to help. Ball powders meter the best, but flake and stick powders are all over the place. I simply don't trust it, so I set it to throw low and trickle the remaining charge. Perhaps there is something wrong with mine (although I'm not really sure what it would be -- the mechanism isn't complicated), but I cannot recommend it based on my experience.

I got my measure in a Lyman T-mag II reloading kit. It is my first measure but I am not very happy with the variation in throw weights not in the difficulty it has cutting my IMR4350 powder. It is easier to just use a lee dipper and trickle up on my Cabelas 1500 scale. The #55 does not seem very tightly built to me. As previously mentioned. Maybe older units where better built.

Very consistent and allows precise adjustments. Works much better with ball type or short cut powders such as W760 or H4831sc. Also does well with slightly longer like RL19. It handles longer ones such as IMR4350 well, but the consistency is not quite as good. Cleaning all the unused powder out of it can be a bit bothersome. Not a problem if you're using it for only one powder but you have to pay very careful attention to get all the old out if you're next load will be with a different powder. Regardless, it does a very good, better than others I've used. I recommend it.

I have two of these and have been using them for 30 years. I like them. I don't think any powder charger will be 100% accurate. That is why I weigh every charge. Any powder charger of this type is measuring powder by volume, not weight. This gets me close and the trickler finishes the job. I use an electronic scale and check every 5 rounds with a beam scale. That is the way to get accuracy.
