Works on some alloys, but ...

Works on some alloys, but not others.~~~I have used this stuff, successfully and unsuccessfully. It worked great on the grip frame of a Colt Frontier Scout 22 mag revolver, which had originally been painted. The finish is dull, not shiny, but it holds up pretty well.~~~Tried it on the chipped paint of the grip frame of a Colt Buntline Scout 22 LR revolver, and it wouldn't even change the color of the alloy a little bit.~~~Used it to touch up trigger guard on an older Ruger 44 Carbine, and some other old parts.~~~Had little success on a Marlin 60 22 auto trigger guard.~~~Usually good fresults, but sometimes the finish was thin and sometimes it wouldn't have any effect at all.

This product is very ...

This product is very alloy sensitive. Works well on 7000 series aluminum/zinc alloys like 7075 which is used for AR-15 receivers. Did not work on 6000 series alloys like those used on some shotgun receivers like Mossberg. Most scope tubes are 6000 series and this solution was at best inconsistent. But it worked well for me when I touched up my Bushmaster receiver.

I used this product on my S & W j-frame which was showing bare metal along the rear sights from holster wear. This was just touch up on a small area. I prepped with steel wool and alcohol. I applied with a cotton swab. The first application was blotchy, but a second application darkened the metal nicely and evenly. I let the applications air dry in between and then rubbed with a cotton rag. The effect was a matte black which was slightly shinier than the surrounding factory paint. There also appeared to be a rim of slight dulling of the paint around the treated area, however, following the recommendations on the bottle, I applied a little gunstock wax and buffed the area. This blended in the treated area with the surrounding paint very well, giving a more even look. Total time was 20 minutes with a very satisfactory result. I don't know about durability at this point, but since this is a chemical reaction rather that a layer of paint, I imagine it should be reasonably durable. Besides, the application is so easy and gives a result I can live with, I don' t think I'd have much problem with having to re-treat after a reasonable amount of time. Good product that does what it claims for its stated use.

I have tried using this product on several types of aluminum with results that were disappointing to say the least. If there is a special alloy that it works on I have yet to try this product on it. I would not reccommend this product to anyone. I like several other BC products such as Super Blue but I give Aluminum Black gets 2 thumbs down.

I used this to touch up a large rub/abrasion mark (not a scratch) on a Leupold matte finish scope that had rubbed against my truck console for a few miles. After a few applications with a Q tip and letting it set for a few seconds, it disappeared completely! It saved the finish on a $700 scope. Very satisfied.

Works acceptably on most die cast Aluminum parts as long as parts are completely clean, well degreased and slightly warm to the touch. Does not work well on zinc die castings. Does work well on steel to blend worn finish on Parkerized or phosphated parts. Recommend boiling parts in clean water with just a bit of dishwashing detergent, so that any moisture evaporates away rapidly of its own heat, then swab parts while still warm. I found this method gives most consistent results. Repeat if not dark enough on first try.

Unless you are covering a tiny scratch, I would stay well away from this product. I followed the directions to the letter, but the small areas I was trying to cover were splotchy and unevenly colored. Don't waste your money.

I used this product on a rifle with apparently different aluminum alloys on different parts of the weapon. Definitely clean and degrease well with denatured alcohol and precisely follow directions. It works instantly on the metal but it colors unevenly. If coloring aluminum/alloys I would consider a firearm spray paint/finish.

This stuff works like magic. I do recommend that you use a new (clean) cotton swab each time you dip into the bottle, so as not to degrade remaining product.
