Product Information

Metallic cases stretch as a result of both the firing process and the subsequent resizing process. When your cases reach a certain dimension, the original case length must be restored through trimming. The Lyman Universal Case Trimmer features the patented Lyman Universal Chuckhead which allows the reloader to quickly lock and unlock a cartridge case and handles any case from .17 caliber to the 458 Winchester Magnum without the need for costly collets. Other features of the Lyman Universal Trimmer include an adjustment ring that allows you to dial in the approximate trimmer setting for ease of repeatability, fine and course length adjustments.

I have also had trouble with .223 cases on my Lyman trimmer. I use a lot of once fired .308 Win. brass and when I put my Craftsman cordless drill on the power shaft I have trouble with the retaining ring slipping. I tighten it properly but when I put the calipers on my brass they get shorter over time. It might be that the drill is too much for the trimmer. I ended up abandoning the trimmer and started buying trim dies from Midway, they are fail proof, precision every time.

I read reviews on pretty much every trimmer out there and finally decided on this Lyman trimmer. My previous experience was with a trim die for my press. That was a lot of work, and I wanted something easier. Hook it up to my Sears cordless drill. Trims fast and accurately. I also had a little trouble with the length getting shorter at first, so I ran the drill on high speed with the adjusting collar against the Trimmer for a few minutes and sprayed lube on it ever little while. Now it seems to stay at the same length when I set it for any given case. I trim 30-30, 30-06, and .223. No problem for me with the cases coming out after I got the hang of using it. I am very happy with this purchase.

I have owned the manual trimmer for 15 plus years. I bought the power adapter and I love it. The first batch I trimmed was 223 cases. I did not have any problem with it. Instead of using a heavy high speed drill I am using an electric screwdriver. Maybe because it spins at a slower speed it doesn't wrench the case out of the chuck. And the lighter weight doesn't affect the shaft as much.

Got mine in today. Ran a good number of various calibers through it. .223 seemed real good, there was plenty of grab still left in the chuck, had no problems. Cut several 9mm Luger cases down to make 9x18 Mak and also did some .270 Win. The trimmer was excellent on every one of them. Results were very predictable, each case was within 0.0005 - 0.001". Setup was easy. The hash marks on the fine adjustment knob are about .001". So, if the case needed trimmed 0.006", I'd move it about 5 marks and try it out. It was usually right on the money. Very easy. On the regular trimmer reviews (not the power pack) folks complain of brass shavings in the pilot holes. They'd be the same ones complaining had Lyman not put the holes there for the pilots. Use a Q-tip. Cut it down to leave a handle and put the head of it in the hole. Keeps brass shavings out and most everyone has Q-tips laying around. Great product, thanks Lyman!

I have a RCBS Trim Pro and the Lyman Universal. Both are the manual type. The Lyman is easier to insert the case and more consistent case to case. I also like the handle on the Lyman as opposed to the knob on the RCBS, its much more comfortable to hold on to.

The universal chuck head works flawlessly, and it comes with all the pilots most of us will ever need. If you're doing a lot of cases, get the power adapter. Good product.

I have been using the Lyman case trimmer with the power pack adapter for several years with great results. I connected the trimmer shaft to my drill press with a flexible shaft. Set the drill press for slow speed, 60 RPM, and let it run. No need to turn it on and off when changing cases. I use a bungee cord to tie up the flexible shaft, which keeps the weight off the trimmer shaft. Just keep the trimmer shaft lubricated for a smooth effortless operation. Trimming hundreds of cases will no longer be a problem.

I've trimmed lots of cases manually on this piece of equipment and found it really works well but as another reviewer said, your arm and hand get tired. I'm glad to see a power addition; if I can just buy that part, I'll be on it like a duck on a June bug.

Trimmer works great. Only problem I have encountered is that the hex shaft attached to the power trimmer was not true, so there is a sight wobble when using a power screwdriver. I notice that the cases are not trimmed evenly as a result. Power adapter is great, but sometimes I wonder if I should have gotten the electric version, as the arm and shoulders get tired after a while by having to attach and remove the power screwdriver each time a case is changed out. Also, I have not had any problems with trimming .223 cases as noted in another review. System works like it should.
