Product Information

These revolutionary bullets from Barnes are made of 100% copper and contain no lead. When the bullet expands, four razor-sharp cutting petals are created, allowing the bullet to penetrate farther through tough bone and tissue. These bullets usually retain 100% of their original weight, making them a superb choice for hunting. Barnes recommends initially seating bullets 0.050" off the lands. Best accuracy will be found from 0.030" to 0.070" depending on the rifle. This is not loaded ammunition.

Due to California laws, we have to use no-lead bullets in some hunting zones which is why I bought this product. After adjusting for powder and OAL (loading data provided by Barnes), this worked great on paper giving me 1/2 - 3/4 in groups at 100 yards. I will be using these on my next hunt. Also purchased other calibers for 30-06, 44, and 458.

WOW! Kill shot is more about placement than anything else, but these things do their part (stay together and drive deep). Been loading these for 2 years now. Shooting a Savage .270 WSM, 3110 fps at the muzzle, little under 1/2" group. Retumbo powder, CCI LRM primers. As another reviewer stated, they do need a long jump to get the accuracy (Barnes tells you the same thing), so seat em deep. Have killed 7 whitetail with these (one big 8), so far everything has died real good and real quick with one shot.

The 140gr TSXs work well ...

The 140gr TSXs work well in my 2070WSM Tika T3. With an almost full load of MagPro, I am pushing these at 3,150fps. Bullet seating depth is no where close to the lands of my rifling. You will need to experiment with bullet seating depth - these bullets appear to need more "jump" than conventional copper jacketed lead bullets. 100 yard performance is consistent 3/4" inch groups.

Elk hunts prior to using ...

Elk hunts prior to using this Barnes 140 grain were frustrating. Hand loaded Nosler Partition at both 150 and 160 grain and these were just disappearing in the body cavity. Breaking apart and bullet retention was just terrible-- perhaps this is the Nosler theory for these? Knock down power was terrible-- this coming from a lifelong Nosler fan. After reading much about the Barnes all copper and re-worked TSX from their original line, I loaded 140 grain. The Nosler's were, at best 2,800 fps w/chromo at muzzle, Barnes was 2,950. Flatter, more accurate on the range with same Sako .270 & Leopold VX3, BUT the biggest advantage was the last two elk that were knocked down by this load as opposed to the others that needed several hits from the Noslers. Maybe anything would have been better than the Noslers? But, I'm sold on Barnes. I now use 130 grain for deer both whitetail and mullies and these too are much better than a Nosler partition in 130 grain. In fact, these are so damaging I wonder if a lighter Barnes would still do the job on deer and gain even a flatter capability. Dead on at 200 yrds, only about 6" low at 300 yards using the Federal Vitol Shok w/Barnes 130. 3,060 fps which I have not been able to duplicate with hand loading!

I shot a cow elk in ...

I shot a cow elk in October '04 with this bullet out of my Remington ADL with a 22" barrell. Velocity is right at 3100 FPS measured on a Chrony. Elk was uphill at 250 yards. Bullet entered low on the close shoulder, passed through lungs, and blew through the far shoulder socket. I found it when skinning the far shoulder. Perfect mechanical mushroom. The elk ran about 20 yards after being shot, then dropped and never moved again.

I loaded the Barnes 140 Grain TSX in a Sako 75 .270 WSM. The velocities that I obtained from my handloads utilizing Norma brass, RL-22 powder and Winchester large rifle magnum primers duplicates the factory velocity for a 140 grain bullet which is 3200 feet per second. Seating depth was adjusted to maximize accuracy in my particular rifle. This load in my rifle averages 1/2"-3/4" for a 3-shot group at 100 yards. I used this load to take an Oryx on White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Bullet performance was exactly what Barnes claims. The bullet expanded as expected and looks just like the expanded bullets on the Barnes website. Retained bullet weight was 100% and expansion of the bullet at the widest point was .510" (almost 2 times the original diameter of .277"). The bullet entered the left side of the front shoulder, passed through the top of both lungs, clipped the bottom 1/3 of the spine, passed through the right shoulder and lodged under the skin. I couldn't ask for any better bullet performance.

I love this bullet for my A-Bolt 270WSM. I am pushing them with RL-22 and getting 3/4" groups at 200yds, yes 200yds. This is the kind of accuracy that I could only hope for in an "off the shelf" rifle. 4 mule deer (2bucks/2does) and a cow elk have dropped in their tracks and all were pass-thrus. I would recommend this bullet to anyone.

This portion of my review may or may not be helpful to some but it is relevant. On Opening day of deer season last Nov. in Kentucky, I killed a coyote at 150 yards and it dropped where it was hit. The entrance and exit hole were very small and of course it was a pass through with such a tough bullet. Also, as with pass throughs on any game, not all of the potential energy was transferred to the coyote. So, here we have a very tough bullet designed for bigger game from the 270 and it put down a very thin skinned small animal. However, there are those that would argue that this bullet is TOO tough for deer or like sized game. Having seen this bullet from one gun drop 2 mulies and 1 coyote quickly and cleanly, and after looking at the Barnes bullet performance on their website with ballistic gel, My OPINION and EXPERIENCE with this bullet is 5 Star. I have more confidence with this bullet on deer or even caribou or elk in case I hit shoulder bone or the spine in terms of penetration.

I apologize for the above rating from me being listed for the 140 grain bullet. I meant for it to be listed under the 130 grain Triple Shock. I have not used the 140 grain yet. This is a correction so it isn't meant to be 'helpful' except for use on the 130 grain bullet.
