The choate hand guard is a perfect fit. It improves the appearance of the Mini- 14 tenfold over that of the Ruger design. It also fits the newer target version mini equally as well. Ruger should honestly consider the choate as a standard feature.

It looks sharp, improved ...

It looks sharp, improved ventilation, and lightweight but strong construction. But, the fit on the front over the gas port is a little uneven (gap on the right side). The real reason I don't like it is because, once I installed it, I realized that the recoil guide will pinch your fingers if you hold it along most of the forearm. The factory guard covers all of the recoil guide arm, the Choate one doesn't cover any. The factory guard may be uglier than this one, but this time function comes before aesthetics. If you shoot from a rest or bipod, this won't be an issue, and I would recommend it (5 stars) for those applications.

I purchased one of these handguards for my Mini-30 after seeing one on a Mini-14. In my opinion they give more of a M1A feel and look to the Ruger series rifles. As with all parts that are 3rd party, there may be some fitting required.

This changes the mini to a true M-14 image. Put on my 30 and 14 they seem to run cooler. My buddies who have mini's are or ordering one for their mini's.

This hand guard snaps ...

This hand guard snaps right on and fits like a glove. It greatly improved the look of my Ranch Rifle, and seems to be keeping the barrel cooler as well. That second part may just be wishful thinking, but the vent holes run the entire length of the hand guard so the barrel is definitely getting more fresh air than it did with the factory piece. As others have mentioned, the op rod will be exposed with this hand guard. Watch your fingers!

Installed on Mini Thirty with Hogue overmold stock. Good tight fit, looks great and disipates heat better. Exposure on the side is not a factor unless you really have a strange hold on the rifle!

I really like how it makes the gun look and it fit my mini-14 nice and tightly. depending on how you hold your rifle you may not want this since it does leave the operating rod fully exposed but for me I like it that way.

A well-made accessory...nice fit, and aesthetically a good match for the Mini. Concerns about finger-pinching from the slide handle are overblown. Only poor technique would cause the pinch. A good add-on!

I got this because I hated the bulbous look of the factory handguard and that the Choate resembled the M14 / M1 style a lot more. This high quality piece made my Mini-14 look WAY BETTER that I loved it all over again. I live in the desert and it seems this handguard also does a better job at ventilating heat from the barrel. This should be the #1 upgrade for any Ranch Rifle! Also: I haven't had a problem with my fingers being hit at all, you'd have to hold it completely wrong and TRY to get your digits close enough to be bumped a bit.

Very happy with this item; it goes a long way to make it look more like an M14 than the factory guard. Haven't fired it yet, but I don't see the loss of the heat shield as a problem. I would have rated 5 stars, but the finish on mine had some blemish, but not enough to send it back for another.

The choate handguard is hands down, way better than the ruger mini 14 factory handguard. When you buy a mini, replacing the factory guard with a choate should be one of the first things you do. And yes, the op rod will now be exposed with the choate. If you are safe and use common sense, it shouldn't present any problems.

Very good product! Installation was quick and easy. The reason I only gave it 4 stars is because it pinches your fingers when the bolt cycles if held on most of the forearm. I also had to sand down the sharp edges all around. Other than that, it's well made and cools down barrel better than the stock one.
