I recently prepared loads ...

I recently prepared loads using the ballistic silver tip for an Antelope Hunting Trip in Montana for my wife's first ever hunt. She has good hunting experience and has used a Ruger M77 270 WIN to harvest several white tail deer. I used published max capacity loads with IMR 4350 and conventional large rifle primers, and seated the bullets with relief on the lands. When setting the gun up on paper, my wife was able to produce nominal 1" groups at 100 yards, although shooting was some what limited by her endurance and here experience. In the field, after hunting hard for several days we finally stalked to within 175 yards of a buck antelope. The animals were bedded down due to wind conditions. The shooter buck was faced directly away from us. With fading light, and difficult hunting conditions, and no alternative stalking routes, she shot the animal from the back forward. The bullet entered the right rump area, traversed the animal and lodged in the back opposite side of the rib cage. The animal got up and ran about 150 yards before collapsing. When butchering the animal, I later recovered the bullet on from under the skin of the animal. I weighed the bullet to find it had retained 90% of the original 130 G weight and had expanded admirably. The bullet had produced an impressive channel in traveling through the meat of the rump area, below the spine, liver, and lung areas. I was amazed at the ability of the animal to get up and run after receiving this level of trauma. I had always believed that ballistic tipped bullets suffer from weight retention problems and fly apart when shot through an animal. Recovery of the bullet with 90% weight retention proved me wrong.

The 130 gr ballistic ...

The 130 gr ballistic silvertip (combined technology) out of my .270 WSM in factory loads is very destructive. Have killed a 200+ lb black bear, and turkey with this bullet. The bear was hit in shoulder blade at approximately 50 yds. The ENTRANCE wound was a 2 inch hole in the hide. The inside looked like a bomb went off; fragmented. All we found of the bullet was pieces lodged inside the ribs opposite side. Jacket and lead core separated.Even the turkey appeared to suffer bullet fragmentation, as there were several exit holes (though that could have been from bone) and it almost blew the large Texas gobbler in half.Just a heads up, the 130 BT is fragile; though very accurate on paper (3.5 inch group @ 300 yds with Savage 11) these are not for large game. Small deer maybe, but even then the meat damage is incredible especially if you hit bone; at least at normal ranges and at .270 WSM factory velocity. Will try more on a white tail and coyote hunt later and advise further.

Loaded the 130's for my wifes "Finicky" model 70 .270. turned out consistent Dime groups. when loaded over IMR 4831. The performance on a large mature whitetail was PERFECT. Complete pass through and good expansion. Buck never untracked himself!

I use this bullet in 270 wsm. I have a custom 26 inch barrel. I am using RL 19 and this bullet is smoking at 3500 FPS . It drives the same hole at 100 yards and I am not lying. I have shot white tails from 25 yards to 415 yards with this load. It is the most accurate bullet made ( period ! ) . I have never had to track a deer more than 50 yards. The bullet holds up at all ranges.

I have been shooting this bullet from a .270, handloaded to 3070fps. Accuracy is outstanding, and I am continually impressed with terminal performance. While I wouldn't suggest using this explosive bullet on animals larger than deer, they are an excellent choice for deer and antelope. Shots of mine have ranged from 15 yards to just outside 400 yards. I honestly don't know the total animal count, but I can't think of one that has walked away. They normally drop in their tracks or run a few feet. The only downside to this bullet is its explosiveness - if you place it in the heart/lung area, or the neck, you will be rewarded with a clean carcass (at least the meat) and the animal will fall where it stood. If you put one in the shoulder, you'll ruin a lot of meat, and tougher animals may just run on you. What's left of the bullet will typically be recovered under the hide on the opposite side.

Just an addition to my previous review of this bullet, loaded in 270 WSM in a factory load.As before, I mentioned this is an accurate bullet, but too light and fragile for any larger game in my opinion. I killed two wild hogs, and a coyote with this load, and was unimpressed with the performance, penetration in particular. The first hog was a bigger 200+ lb boar I hit at 145 yds running/quartering away. The bullet hit him in the far back rib and actually made it into his lungs, barely. This wasn't bad performance, but the next day I shot a smaller pig in almost exactly the same spot on her body from approx 50 yds, and it actually blew gut out onto the ground. The coyote was running and I hit him thru the ribs-double lung at a little over 100 yds; it knocked chunks of lung out on the ground and spattered blood for ten feet out the exit. The exit hole was the size of a grapefruit.The striking velocity seems to be critical; 3,000 fps seems to be the limit for decent penetration with this load and minimal meat damage. The factory loads from WIN are around 3,200 and change, and up close it just junks meat. Definitely going to be looking for a tougher bullet for the 270 WSM-maybe an Accubond in 140 grn.Happy hunting

Loaded these to a little above 2950 fps in my .270 Winchester and it grouped three shots at less than one half inch. Used them this year in Wyoming on an antelope at a little over 300 yards. The antelope was left side quartering towards me so I aimed at the left shoulder. The bullet entered just forward of the left shoulder and exited behind the right shoulder. The buck took one step and dropped. The entrance hole was bullet size, but the exit hole was the size of a quarter with good damage to the lungs. This is good performance at that range.

These CT Ballistic Tips are the most accurate hunting bullet that I have ever used. I have shot two medium sized Mule deer buck with this bullet at about 275-300 yards and both were instantaneous kills. I would not recommend this bullet at above 2900 fps striking velocity because of it light construction. These bullets shoot 3/4" groups in my pre-64, Model 70, .270 Winchester. However I do use Nosler Partition bullets for trophy mule deer hunting.

I hand loaded and tested numerous loads and bullet brands for my Remington 700 with a 24" barrel in .270 this past summer in preparation for a Pronghorn hunt in September 2008 in SE Wyoming. This bullet clearly produced the tightest groups for my rifle. I shot my antelope at 264 yards. The bullet entered just behind the left front shoulder and we found it lodged just inside the hide by the right rear ham. I was surprised that the bullet had separated but its effects were excellent. The goat dropped in his tracks like he was hit with a sledgehammer.
