Not as fancy as the more expensive models, but does an excellent job. Found it to trim very accurately. A great buy for the money.

Bought this based on ...

Bought this based on manufacturers claim of accuracy and because I found it on sale. Well for some who aren't really concerned about "accuracy" it'll do fine. I'm not a benchrest shooter but I do enjoy consistency. Two areas of inconsistency are immediately inherent with this unit, first is the .002 of run out between the shaft and the shaft support with the shaft extended to approximately half it's travel toward the shell holder. This run out translates to .004" play considering the rotational path while turning the handle resulting in out of square cases. Second the pilot retained by a set screw forces the pilot stud against the pilot stud bore opposite the set screw, which would be Ok if the fit between the stud and the bore were significantly closer. The one I have this difference is .0015", translating into .003" additional rotational error possible. Factor the "fine adjustment" set screw riding on the end of the shaft support and the inconsistent rim thickness of shell cases the tolerance for "accuracy" grows even larger. I've had instances of out of square case mouths run as much as .0035" and overall length variations as much as .004" not too bad considering the total possible error. This is a good unit for what I consider rough trimming. The finish is great and ease of use fair. It takes time to use and one needs to practice with it on junk cases to learn how to trim with it for best accuracy, I found that by allowing the case to rotate a bit in the shell holder every once in a while the level of squareness could be held tolerable.

Requires excessive force to spin the handle even when not trimming a cartridge. Tried graphite dust, didn't help. Noticed the shaft was being scored by a burr and hit it with some grinding compound and ran it for a while. That helped. Still doesn't spin easily. May need to hit it with more grinding compound. I don't recommend this product.

I generally like Lyman products but not this one. I've tried to coax the shell clamping end in line with the cutting end and have gotten it closer than it came stock but the extrusion is pretty flexible and the face of the cylinder that the adjustment screw rides on is not square with the shellholder after the pilot gets tweaked over far enough to engage the case mouth. I will replace it this week with a better quality product and throw this one in the back of the survival preparation Conex box for emergency use only.

Junk, do not buy. ...

Junk, do not buy. Trimming brass with this unit is a tedious and painful process. The shell holder doesn't secure the case properly. The spindle will go out of whack, and you will probably lose the tiny set screw trying to adjust the thing. Get the basic Redding trimmer instead. It's at least 3 times better.

I really didnt care for this trimmer at all. I am fairly new to reloading and perhaps a bit of a perfectionist, but I would think a product would be a bit more consistent than this. This being my first case trimmer I really didnt know what to expect. It was difficult to adjust, you pretty much had to take a wild guess on your "fine" adjustment screw. I had variations of up to .004 in my .270 win cases. Its boxed up and going back to the store. After reading the overwhelming positive feedback on the Hornady trimmer, I think I'll go that route.

Once again from Lyman, this is junk. It does not produce any repeatable results. All the cases I trimmed in this varied a bit. Spend more and get a better unit.

Ive had mine since the mid 90's. I haven't had to replace any parts yet and the cutter still works well. As others have said, there is some slight "play" in the unit due to loose tolerances. Not a bad pick for the price though. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an entry level case trimmer.

Good quality trimmer for 33 bucks. I have the more expensive lyman trimmer with the "universal" chuck. Had to replace the Chuck. 22$ from lyman. It's flimsy. This case trimmer uses standard shell holders from all manufactures.Fits right in trimmer and holds any shell firmly. It will never need replaced. It holds the shell firmly, any shell, as long as you have the correct shell holder. (except 50 cal) This is what makes ita great trimmer. It will last forever. Yeah it takes a lil longer to do alot of cases. But, it's worth in the long run. It even comes with the collets . Great deal.

Stop collar for adjusting length of cut slips. Cutter head seems to be dull. Called Lyman and they did not sound surprised that I was having trouble. Immediately agreed to send replacement parts to me at their cost. Wish I had bought the Lee Zip Trim and case length gauge/shellholder instead.

This trimmer is a rugged machine and it is reasonably priced. It's a basic design and the use of regular shellholders is a big plus rather than fooling around with pilots. I put it to work on 2000 overlength 30-30 cases and it sailed right thru them. It's now working thru another 2000 '06 cases. The cutter is still sharp and doing its job. Trimming cases is not an interesting job and this trimmer doesn't make it go any faster; if you're in a rush go with a power driven unit, but this one is a solid value and the quality is good
