A decent set with a large ...

A decent set with a large block of wood to hold the punches and hammer. There is not a lid or cover for the punches so it's simply a holder on a bench that takes up a lot of space and adds to the shipping cost. I was looking forward to receiving a roll pin punch with the set, based on the description of roll punch, but alas there was not a roll pin punch in the set. Felt I overspent for a simple punch set to be used on gun smithing as it's not a brass set.

I've owned this set of punches for about 10 years. The punches are great quality and a very good selection of sizes for gunsmithing. I have had no issues with the punches. As the item description notes, the hammer is a "TAPPER" hammer, and not meant to be used with a lot of force. (If you are having to "pound" a pin or sight, you are either trying to drift it in the wrong direction, or need to polish/file the pin or dovetail to fit.) Yes, the hammer heads do loosen some when used, which is inherent with changeable head hammers, but this is easily solved with a little Loctite on the threads. Yes, the brass punch will mushroom, but this is inherent for brass punches. You want it to mushroom rather than mar your sight. The wood tray is a real plus, fitting easily in a toolbox drawer, and keeping the punches in order. Only drawback for me, is it is a little cumbersome with my big fingers to get the punches out of the tray, but that's a small issue for a great set of punches.

I have purchased this same set, the problems with the hammer is my utmost concern, the white nylon chips and breaks off at the thread, the brass side is constantly loose making it hard to knock out drift pins or such, not what I expected from Lyman.

Purchased said set. Upon arrival found that one punch was missing. Midway unwilling or unable to ship replacement. Offered Midway dollars as compensation. I accepted. Comes in wood block that had greasy fingerprints on it. Was the quality found in Middle School Shop classes. It took some sanding and grooming on my part to make it appear acceptable. Major shipping costs are due to this un-needed block of wood. Would rather have just had the tool set.

I have had this set for over a year. I have been very pleased with the quality of the punches but the hammer is lacking. I found myself constantly having to re-tighten the heads and base. When I finally got the nylon head where it wouldn't spin off during use it instead tightened itself until it snapped the threads so now I have a one sided hammer.

The key word on this is "tapper Hammer" it is just right for tapping pins in and out for assembly and disassembly operations. If you have to strike something with the hammer you need a bigger hammer. I like the punches in the kit. I prefer the feel of a round shank and the knurling provides a non-slip grip. The disadvantage of a round shank punch is it's tendency to roll but that is where the wooden tray comes in handy. You just have to remember to lay it in the tray when you are working on an uneven surface. The hardened 4140 punches had a smooth edge on the tip. I didn't have to stone them to remove a sharp edge. The punch is apparently a force fit into a mild steel shank. This is good because you get can get maximum hardness on the punch with out getting an overly hard hammer splintering possible striking surface on the shank. The shanks are stamped with the size but it is somewhat hard to read on the smaller punches. I'm going to get some white or yellow crayon to fill the markings. I have written the sizes on the wooden tray which will work as long as I remember to put them back in the right place. The little brass punch is nice but for moving sights I would use caution. It is OK for steel sights but some of the night sights are aluminum and a nylon drift punch would be the thing to use. I would like a removable lid for the sake of portability. I'll just have to make on. All in all I'd rate it a good buy.
