Product Information

Lyman 1-Cavity Bullet Molds are made from solid leaded-steel and machined to an exact and smooth super fine finish. The molds are then heat treated (that is why they are blue in color) and feature hardened steel alignment pins to provide many years of bullet casting service. Sprue plates are made from solid steel, ground flat and held tightly in place with tempered steel spring washers and screws. In addition, break-in is often half the time required for iron molds. These molds cast perfect hollow base Foster-style slugs which do not require rifling. Slug molds are 1-cavity molds that are cut into the larger 2-cavity mold block.

I discovered these (wasp-wasted) slugs about 15 or so years ago. Unlike most of the reviewers, I stuff them into my Navy Arms sideXside blackpowder shotgun. I cut the cushion portion of the waa-wad off then load it on top of the normal fiber wads used for blackpowder shotguns, along with 90gr of FF blackpowder. I've been doing it for years. It does the trick!

Awesome slug mold. If youre into 12 ga slugs, this is the mold to invest in. This slug fits into a standard WAA12 wad cup, and is the correct overall diameter for a cylinder bore.(.729"-.730") No need for a roll crimp, a fold crimp is what Lyman calls for in the 5th edition shotshell reloading manual. Shoots 2" groups out of my smooth bore Mossberg 930SPX at 50 yards.

Awesome mold! I cast 100 slugs in the first casting session, with very few rejects. Nice, clean, crisp slugs out of this mold, with just a solvent cleaning and a quick 'sooting' with a Bic lighter. I can hardly wait to find good loading data for the 2 3/4" Fiocchi hulls and do some ballistics tests with them. Should be able to 'plant' game where they stand this Fall. BTW, the Lee Commercial 6-Cavity Bullet Mold Handles fit this mold perfectly.

I have made many hundreds of these slugs and love'em! The mold works great with pure lead or wheel weights. With a Mossberg 500 with the 18" smooth bore barrel and a 3x scope, I can hit a clay target in the sand bank at 85 yards any time! With the 24" smooth bore slug barrel with open sights, almost as good. These are easy to load up and a blast to shoot! And the savings can't be beat.

I really like this mould. First off, it does come with the wooden handled stem for making the hollow base of the sabot. I didn't see that in the advertising. Second, the mould is typical Lyman quality: top notch. Third, I got this to cast up slugs for practice out of my shotgun for bear protection. Should be a fun project.

Good groups using Rem 870 ...

Good groups using Rem 870 with rifled slug barrel and 2x7 scope. Max range was 80 yards with decent groups of 3 inches. I don't load hot and stay with middle range of powder charge, otherwise I'm sure greater distance would be doable. Suggestions: after casting weigh the slugs and group and load according to weight. I have had variations of 20 grains with the same batch of lead. Also use a shot card under the slug. This improved accuracy greatly. I used AA hulls, Winchester wads with the petals trimmed down, shot card under the slug and Bluedot powder. Lot cheaper than buying factory slugs and equally effective on deer and black bear.

I am fairly satisfied with the results I have obtained so far. I did fire about 70 or so through my 870 and found them to shoot consistently well. Ranges are seldom over 60 yards and usually less than 30; even most still hunting shots are less than 100 yards. Deer shot with these slugs react exactly the same as when shot with conventional slugs. These slugs seem to group erratically way past 110 yards so they are not a long range option. I loaded these using AA hulls, WAA12R wads and Blue Dot powder. After doing some initial testing I backed off the hot load a little and loaded many shells using pure lead and about 50 or so cast from wheel weights. I gave these loaded rounds to people to try in various types of shotguns. I had no means of weighing the slugs at the time so these were run of the pot slugs with any having visually noticeable flaws discarded. Since then I have weighted the cast slugs and found the pure lead castings vary by as much as 15 grains of the expected weight.

Excellent product. I'm getting less than 3" groups at 100 yards through a 21" rifled barrel. I find I get much better casting results with 30:1 or pure lead. I used the data from Lyman's "Shotshell Reloading Handbook: 4th Edition" (961083). I found the suggested loads a little too hot and backed them off about 150 ft/sec. I got best results with blue dot.

I don't cast with this ...

I don't cast with this mold so I can't rate it on that end. I do, however, buy the slugs from this mold from a guy who casts them in bulk and sells them. This slug will do wonders on white-tail does in shotgun only hunting areas incredibly accuracy and nock-down power. Has put a lot of meat on the table for me. For best accuracy the 12S3 wad or Claybuster equivalent works best with all powders and hauls. This wad doesn't get mushed up like other wads and engages the rifling of my gun then separates cleanly from the slug.

Top quality tool and the ...

Top quality tool and the slug is the coolest looking out there, it's like a giant airgun pellet. My best results come from cutting out the 4 little legs in a WW wad and replace with 1/2" or more of fiber to match shell length. Blue Dot powder of course. Roll crimps come out much nicer in both looks and power. All the loads I made exceed any factory velocity. My only complaint is the wad petals always buckle as they push past the crimp or roll so their purpose is nullified and the loose slug doesn't leave the barrel straight. I would redesign it larger to use without a plastic wad.
