Product Information

Lyman 1-Cavity Bullet Molds are made from solid leaded-steel and machined to an exact and smooth super fine finish. The molds are then heat treated (that is why they are blue in color) and feature hardened steel alignment pins to provide many years of bullet casting service. Sprue plates are made from solid steel, ground flat and held tightly in place with tempered steel spring washers and screws. In addition, break-in is often half the time required for iron molds. Mold handles are not included.

Well built and good ...

Well built and good quality. Im giving it 3 stars because you have to use Lyman alloy to get it to specification. Without enough tin they come out as heavy as 400 grain and come out undersized. Lee molds using the alloy I did with this casted to the weight listed.Mine does cast out of round were .502 would be one reading then rotate the bullet and .500 would be a second reading. Also I dinged it because I had to buy the Lyman reloading book to get load data. Couldnt find the information any were on the internet. If your looking for a round to plink with that cost 27 cents, yes I did the math and thats what the ammo cost me with reloaded brass, this will do it. good quality but as stated from Lyman, it is designed around Lyman products so its designed under Lyman alloy, Lyman lube, Lyman lube sizer, etc, etc. if lee made a mold around this weight or lighter I definitely would have bought that mold over this. it does what I need it to, just not as good as lee.

This is one of my favorite molds for 500 S&W. It casts very nice / accurate bullets after prep. I wanted to fire this full power so I found a way to put a gas check on this bullet by using my RCBS press mounted bullet puller with a 0.500 collet. I inserted a 1/8" section of the bullet's bottom driving band into the puller collet and squeezed down the diameter just enough to seat a .50 hornady gas check by hand. Then I crimped the gas check by running it through a Lee bullet sizer in 0.501". I find I can fire the bullet up to 1,700 fps w/o leading issues. Great!

Overall a good mold and ...

Overall a good mold and bullet wieght for the s&w 500. I've used it for target loads a about 1000 fps with good results. These load are not as hard on the shooter and are cheaper than factory ammo. It should be noted that Lyman lists this mold at 375 gr not 360 gr as listed in the midway catalog. Using #2 alloy I'm getting about 374 gr.
