Product Information

Hornady Custom-grade ammunition provides shooters and hunters custom grade ammunition but in a factory offering. Each round is built to the tightest tolerances for peak performance rivaling and sometimes surpassing handloads in many guns. This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable brass cases.

The A-Max bullet may be the most technologically advanced bullet ever designed. The aerodynamic secant ogive profile, sharp, pointed tip and unmatched concentricity give it an extremely high ballistic coefficient for near perfection in flight. After closely studying the performance of bullets for more than half a century, Hornady has incorporated every aspect of what makes a bullet accurate into the A-Max.

Designed off of the original Alexander Arms AR-15 cartridge, Hornady created a new 123 grain bullet specifically for long range hunting of thin skinned game and long range target shooting. New brass and bullets in this caliber are also available for purchase separately for those interested in reloading.

This ammo is responsible for 165 lb. 8 pt. buck that currently is residing in my freezer. It functions flawlessly in my AR-15 platform rifle and downed its target at 160 yds. It typically prints 1 inch at 100 yds. On this particular shot, I either made an error or the bullet was slightly deflected as the deer was standing behind some tall grass. The bullet shot just forward of the heart on the front part of the shoulder. He died none the less 25 yds. from where the shot took place. This round exceeded my expectations. Thanks for a great product.

Finally received the 5 boxes I've had on back order for quite some time. Went to the range to try them in my Alexander Arms upper with the Shilen barrel upgrade. 4 of the 14 rounds I tried to fire would not chamber. From looking at the ogive on the bullet, they were jammed into the lands. The remaining 90 rounds are on their way back to Hornady. The 10 rounds I did manage to shoot were quite accurate, and I HOPE the replacement ammo I receive from Hornady is as accurate, and will actually CHAMBER. Hornady claims they designed this bullet especially for the AA Grendel chamber. Since AA chambered this barrel, I am pretty sure it meets the specs for a Grendel. It chambers the AA loaded Ballistic Tip ammo just fine. I rate the quality of the ammo as 5 stars, but the fact that it's pretty much useless in MY AA upper knocks it down to poor (roughly 25% won't chamber due to the bullet profile).

Shoots great! 2" group at 400yds... I'm using a 20"barrel with a 1-8 twist. The upper was built by SAOD.

Very good ammo, very clean burning and great practice/hunting/competition ammo. Its very nice that I can practice with the same ammo I shoot in competition and hunt with. It will consistently also print .34 MOA groups. It has dropped every animal that I have hit with it. I'm sold on Hornady and 6.5 Grendel and will be taking it on a Barbary Sheep hunt in March.

We were hitting pigs at 600 yards. Not boars the but the small pigs. You can bet we'll buy more. Cycling was flawless in my AA 24" V-Match. If you have a choice get a Mil Dot or BDC type scope. I'm ordering more tonight.

I had some not so good ...

I had some not so good results from this ammo. The best group I could achieve was about 5 inches at 200 yards from my Alexander Arms 24" Shilen upper. I was about to throw the gun in the creek. I tried my hand loads and got a 1 inch group at 200 yards. This was at the same setting and same day and time so the conditions didnt differ. I will not buy this ammo for my Grendel anymore and just continue to handload. The only reason I gave it 2 stars was because it fed through the gun with no problems.

Decent price for exotic ammo, outstanding performance on my 18" upper. Sub-MOA at 100 yards, with no FTF or FTE. Tested out to 300 yards with 100% hits on 6" steel targets.

Great factory ammo for a hard to finder caliber. 24" Satern barrel consistently shoot 2" groups at 400 yards. Can get 1.5" at 400 with handloads using AA2520 and BR primers. Not much of a gain when hitting a coke can is easy at that distance with the Hornady. Will buy more.

I have run over 300 rounds of the factory Hornady 123gr A-Max through my 18" AA carbine, with out a single failure to feed or eject. It has shot half MOA all the way out to 300 yards. 1" to 1 1/4" inch groups are the norm at 200 yards. It has shot it's share of 1 1/2" groups at 300 yards. Just incredible. I have tried several hand loads so far that can't even touch the accuracy of Hornady's factory offering, which doesn't happened very often with firearms in my world. Thank you Hornady!

WOW, I built a 6.5 Grendel using a Satern barrel (24" medium weight 8.75/1 twist-Midway item #917940) and have been getting better than 1/2 inch groups with handloads. This ammo is better than any other loaded ammo I have tried!! Feeding and chambering is great with no problems and accuracy is less than 1/2" at 100 yards (5 shot groups)!! If your wanting to check your build and handloads, this is the standard to use.

Shot 1/2 MOA with the first 3 rounds out of my AR Stoner barrel. It was a shoot 1 round, clean, shoot another, clean, shoot the 3rd. Those 3 rounds were 1/2 MOA. Absolutely wonderful stuff. Once again, Hornady never failed me.
