Metallic cases stretch as a result of both the firing process and the subsequent resizing process. When your cases reach a certain dimension, the original case length must be restored through trimming. The Lyman Universal Case Trimmer features the patented Lyman Universal Chuckhead which allows the reloader to quickly lock and unlock a cartridge case and handles any case from .17 caliber to the 458 Winchester Magnum without the need for costly collets. Other features of the Lyman Universal Trimmer include an adjustment ring that allows you to dial in the approximate trimmer setting for ease of repeatability, fine and course length adjustments.

I bought this trimmer at ...

I bought this trimmer at the recommendation of a gunsmith friend of mine. He was absolutely right when he told me it is an excellent, repeatable trimmer. I have had absolutely no problems with the "wobble" others have written about, however I ensure the case is centered in the chuck and the pilot is inside the case mouth before tightening the chuck. I also ensure the cutting head is tightly screwed in to the cutter shaft. I also found setting the cutting length of the shaft to be easy when I use a reference piece of brass in the new caliber. When using the trimmer, take your time and be patient when using this product and it will reward you with precisely trimmed brass to the nearest +/- 0.001 every time.

I bought my trimmer more than 15 years ago. I've not used it much. I trim after resizing because cases stretch further when they are sized. The Lyman pilots are too tight to use in resized cases. For my 30-06 and 300 Win Mag loads I had to take the 308 pilot and put it into a drill chuck and hold it on a grinding stone until it was the proper diameter, then follow up with some fine grit sandpaper to smooth it out so as not to scratch the inside of my case necks. The construction of the shaft is shabby too, a few years ago I had the handle fall off the shaft's throw and I had to reinstall it and "blunt" the end with a hammer to keep it in position. Just a few days ago the shaft's throw has come loose from the shaft. I've tried Loc-tite, solder, and marring the two with a punch, and it will not hold together. In addition, Lyman's customer support has been completely absent so far. I've called and e-mail and not gotten a reply yet. The lack of Customer Support has convinced me to buy another brand of trimmer, but I don't know who just yet. The case locking mechanism is a winner though, it works easily and holds well on everything I've put in it from 10mm, to .38 special, to 223 Rem, to 300 Win Mag.

I have had this trimmer for over 15 years now and you can't beat it. It is mounted to my loading bench next to the press and it doesn't get daily use but I have trimmed thousands of cases of all types and thee cutter is still sharp and trims fast and clean. There is some slack in the bushings now and it does not line up absolutely square but this is probably more from wear than craftsmanship. There are better trimmers out there but for the price you can't beat this one. It works great for my needs.

The first time I used this trimmer the plate that the case snugs up to fell off do to the screws pulling out, they are only about 1/4 inch long and they could be 3/4 of an inch. The design is very good, with poor execution.

I've used mine for about a year now and can only comment on it's ability to trim .308 cases as that's all I've used it for. I've not had any problems with mine at all. To get better centering, you need to start the case on the pilot before clamping down the chuck. Once it is started, a very light clamp is all that is needed. I turn the rotor as the pilot enters the neck and lightly clamp the chuck as I spin it. Easily produces OAL's within .001" I do brush the inside of the necks with a bronze brush before trimming. That will probably aid in the life of my non-carbide cutter.

Been reloading for about 35 yrs. and had always used Lee trimmers because they were easy, fit in a drill etc. I thought I'd try one of these because of its versatility and I'd rather have spent the money on a few more Lee tools. Now I'm not a big fan of Lee tools but I like their trimmers.

Worked well to start off but I have noticed a bad wobbling of the main shaft. This has resulted in scoring of the inside of the case necks. Replacement heads and pilots didn't help although the original head was quite dull. I suggest a different trimmer.

Very satisfied with this case trimmer. I use it for rifle, .270 Win and .30-06 Springfield. It's consistent to +/- 0.001 inch. Take the time to read and follow the instructions. I've read the reviews and can't find a single complaint that can't be attributed to not taking the time to follow the instructions except for two: (1) The shavings do go into the holes intended to store the guides. That's a "so what?" for me as I don't store the guides there and it burns maybe a calorie or two to turn it over and dump the shavings out. (2) A place to store the Allen wrench would be nice.

Bought this because it was cheaper than the others and it was a big disappointment. When I try to trim 45 Colt or 44 Mag brass it throws it out. That is what I get for trying to save money, bought a RCBS and it works great.

I would have to say this is the worst purchase I have made in years. The 3 jaws had to be replaced before I had trimmed 100 cases and they need replacing again. If you hold the case because the jaws won't, you can't trim to a consistent length. The pilots are too large to fit in a case that has been sized. I will trash this trimmer and buy the Hornady unit.

I have noticed many reviews that refute the poor reviews are from people who have had this trimmer for many many years...obviously the quality of the components has declined since then because the camlock assembly is just junk. The retaining pieces are made from metal soft enough to take extensive wear from brass in a short time and after trimming about 150 5.56 cases I can no longer get it to hold the case and prevent spinning. All attempts I have made including the adjustments suggested by Lyman (when they FINALLY responded) have failed to correct this problem. The build quality of the rest of this trimmer is good, but Lyman dropped the ball with small parts like set screws and retainers in the camlock. These are all soft metal and next to worthless. Of course the set screws can be replaced with better ones after you get it...but I didn't buy a "kit" I bought a ready to go case trimmer. Shame on Lyman.

I can't give this a 5 Star because the arbor will not hold 5.7 cases, the second most plentiful of my cases to cut. I had a problem getting the pilot into the 5.7 case as well but found that to be a resizing issue with my die. I do like the ability to choose the length you desire to cut a case. I had no other problems with other size cases with the tool.
