Mr. Matthews has ...

Mr. Matthews has detailed(in print)more than the average Joe will ever want to know concerning the .45-70! Great stuff!! I have found it to be true! I cannot speak regarding "how-to's for the black powder shooter" (yet)...but I expect this info to be solid!! Read also about "paper patched bullets, you will be glad!

This is a very well ...

This is a very well written easy to under stand extremely informative book. If you are a big fan of the 45-70 this book is must. Their is allot of info on reloading both for hunting, plinking and target. The book gets into areas like patch bullets, duplex powder loads, casting and some very interesting pet loads. I have this book now for 2 years and have read it many times and still refer to it very often.

A good source of information on cast bullets. Includes paper patched bullets as well. A lot of information as well as history and the author's experience add to the book.

I had hoped for more ...

I had hoped for more blackpowder information. I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about using/reloading blackpowder. Not much of that here, more of modern powder & Mr. Matthews experiences with modern, not old time 45-70's.

Found the book to be ...

Found the book to be rather disappointing. The author has apparently made a lifetime of piddling about with the .45-70, largely creating short range loads that aren't much beyond the capability of the .45 Long Colt cartridge in power. It's too bad he didn't attempt to stretch the .45-70's usefulness out to something beyond that of a 100 yard whitetail gun, as it was intended to be.

This book is well worth ...

This book is well worth the price. It is a summary of the author's life in terms of his hobby with the 45-70. He includes stories of the various guns he's owned in the caliber, as well as various hunts where he used a 45-70. He details many experiments with cast bullets and his trials with trying to find accurate bullets in the different styles of guns he owned (i.e. Ruger #1, Marlin 1895, Winchester 1886, etc.). The book is well-written, entertaining, and has a good bit of useful info in it, including handload data and bullet data from accuracy tests. It does end in about 1996, so it barely touches on the current resurgence in popularity of the 45-70, but this doesn't detract from the value of the book.

Not a load book, per se, ...

Not a load book, per se, but full of good info on a variety of subjects like cast bullets, paper patches, bullet weights for different game, opinions formed over 40 (46) years experience and just good storytelling to keep you reading. I wish there was a sequel!!
