When it comes to shooting original Trapdoor BP, there are not many choices for bullets. Tried these after melting off lube, then pan lubing with BP lube, and never could get good groups. After getting a Hardness Tester, found out why. These are Hard Bullets, with a Brinell of 15.4. Great for modern 45-70 smokeless loads, but not so much with BP, which obdurate properly at around 8-10 BHN.

This is a great bullet. With Win primers and near max load of H322, FPS is over 1900. This delivers over 3000 ft-lbs of energy. Plenty for any N. American game, but it sure is punishing with my Marlin 1895. My next loads will target 1200 fps or so which will exceed the black powder load. Many comments state surprise with the larger size relative other 405 grain bullets. The answer lies in the alloy composition of the Laser-Cast bullet. The other metals have a lower mass than lead, therefore the Laser-Cast bullet has a lower density than a pure lead bullet. Consequently, this bullet will be slightly longer in order to achieve 405 grains.

I shoot these in a Ruger #1 45-70 Government with light loads of TrailBoss powder. This gun and load combination shoots consistently well. Groups on paper @ 100 yards are 1" or less, which really surprised me!

Great bullet with H4198 ...

Great bullet with H4198 in my 1874 Sharps 32" barrel, cloverleafs at 50yds and 1.5" at 100yds but in my Ruger No.1 everywhere on the target, never go below 6" group with same load, will change to 5744 and try it. First 45-70 rifle I ever saw that didn't like 4198.

Just an update: Was getting 3-4" groups at 100 yards with 777. Tried using Varget next with the starting loads from Hodgdon web site and groups are now 2-2.5" out of 7-10 shot groups. Lots of touching bullet holes.

Bought these as cheap ...

Bought these as cheap fodder to work up a load for a NEF Handi-Rifle, tried RL7 (YUCK), then I tried IMR 4320, better but still was 4" or more at 50yds, then I tried AA5744 WOW! 25.5grns was the magic number. Off the bench I shot a string of 10 shots using a 4x Weaver at the 50yrd stand. There were 3 holes, with 8 witnessed shots leaving a hole 1"x1.25". Next weekend I tried again, after 2 fouling shots I put 5 shots in a hole the size of my thumbnail. Clean up is a snap as there was little or no leading of my barrel. I'm waiting for the 1000ct to come off back order so I can order more!

I loaded these in Starline brass with Trail Boss powder in order to fire form the brass for black powder silhouette competition. They shot 1180 fps. I took them prairie dog shooting on a cold day in Colorado with considerable wind and was shocked how well they shot. I consistently shot under 10" groups at 600 plus yards using my 45-70 Browning B.P.C.R. target rifle with competition iron sights. There was however a down side. After 50 shots I experienced considerable leading in my barrel. It could have been a lube problem with the cold day and the slow velocity I'm not sure. I would like to try them again with a softer lube like SPG and see if that helps. I have also used them hog hunting in my 45-70 Marlin cowboy at 1725fps with good 2moa @ 100yard results and excellent penetration.

I am using these bullets for plinking at the range. The manufaturer claims that these bullets do not lead and I found that to be true at least with the loads that I loaded . The heaviest load pushes the bullet to around 1750 fps in a Marlin 1895 22" but accuracy is better with less...The price is good and I have not had a single "bad" bullet (dented, no lubricant) with the about 3000 rounds I loaded so far.I do not know (yet) how good they perform on game but hopefully will have a chance to test it this fall. I'll give an update - if I don't miss....

I have been shooting 45-70 for about 4years now and most of it was with 300bg. remington jhp. for game . I just started to shoot the 45-70 on targets and this 405gr. lead bullet is the best in all of the lead bullets I have used it is odd that it is a bit longer that any other 405 I have used . I think that has to be the reason why it groups in half the size of all the other lead bullets .I am useing it in winchester brass ,Winchester primer , and H4198. with a taper crimp not a heavy roll crimp. The rifle is a 1874. sharps rep. with a 34in barrel. to date I have only used it out to 300 yards and am getting about 2 3/4" to 3 1/4" 5 shot. I did not try any of the other 405gr. leads bullets past 100yard they just did not do what this bullets could so why try .The only other bullet I am looking into are bullets in the 500gr. range . I have done good with a few of them but I just got the correct load with the 405's so soon I hope to get the 500's down . I will post something on how the 405's do at 600 yards so I gust need to get one of my buds to pull targets at my local range. You would think it easy to get some one to try 600yards.Ps. get the RCBS cowboy die set if you load 45-70 .
